Little Rock has a variety of things to see and do. There are quite a few historic buildings which many visitors find of interest, and there are too many to list them all here, so some of the highlights of Little Rock include…
Arkansas State Capitol Building
Built in 1915 the most obvious thing about the Arkansas State Capitol is its similarity to the US Capitol in Washington DC, and this is not coincidence. The Arkansas State Capitol was modeled after the US Capitol and has actually been used in place of the real one in Washington for several movies! When there are no sessions you can take tours of the building, though the grounds, which feature several monuments, can be viewed at any time.
The Old State House
From the current to the old, the Old State House was used as the Capitol until the new one was built. The building is now a museum and has been preserved for future generations with both permanent and temporary exhibitions.
Quapaw Quarter
Next to downtown Little Rock is the Quapaw Quarter where you’ll find 19th century Victorian homes. Although most of them are privately owned and hence not accessible, a couple of times a year some of them open their doors to visitors. At other times of the year you can visit the Governor’s Mansion, though tours must be arranged in advance of your visit.
Other Historical Places of Interest
You can find out more about the history of Little Rock and the state of Arkansas in the city’s museums, which include the Historic Arkansas Museum, Ernie’s Museum on Black Arkansas, and the MacArthur Museum of Arkansas Military History. Other interesting sites include the Little Rock National Cemetery, Mount Holly Cemetery, and the Central High School National Historic Site and Museum.
Pinnacle Mountain State Park
Little Rock is not all about man made attractions. Just outside the city is the Pinnacle Mountain State Park where you can hike up the Pinnacle and get great views of the Arkansas River. The park also has other hiking trails, plus canoeing and birdwatching are popular too.
