San Francisco, the City by the Bay, is one of the USA’s best loved and most visited cities. It includes some of the most famous and iconic landmarks of the United States; the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, and Chinatown, along with an eclectic mix of cultures, cuisines, and architectures.

Flights to San Francisco

Flights to San Francisco land at the San Francisco International Airport (airport code: SFO), about 12 miles outside the city. You can get into the city by BART rail, public bus, taxi or rental car. Several airlines offer direct flights to San Francisco from the UK, including British Airways, United Airways, and Virgin Atlantic. There are also flights to San Francisco with Air New Zealand that make one connection in Los Angeles.

San Francisco Tourist Attractions

Whether you’re visiting for a short break or a longer holiday, San Francisco is a city that certainly will not bore you. It appeals to visitors young and old, with its mix of attractions that include some of the most famous sights in the USA. Among the many things you can see and do in San Francisco are the following:

Fisherman’s Wharf

One of the most popular attractions of San Francisco is Fisherman’s Wharf. As the name suggests, this was once just a wharf where the fishermen would come and go, and sell their catches. Today you can still buy fresh seafood from Fisherman’s Wharf but a lot more has been added, including some great seafood restaurants. The Wharf is full of some great stores too, where you can buy all sorts of items, and there are museums and an aquarium here too. Historic vessels are also on display or you can simply wander along the boardwalks and look out into the Bay.

From Fisherman’s Wharf you can take a boat cruise into San Francisco Bay, passing under the iconic Golden Gate Bridge or cruising past the famous island of Alcatraz.

Alcatraz

Those boat cruises won’t take you to Alcatraz as there is a designated service that does this, but the boats do leave from this part of San Francisco.

Alcatraz is an eerie place but definitely a must-see attraction while you’re visiting San Francisco. You can take a guided tour of the former prison, seeing the cells that once housed the most notorious American criminals including Al Capone, and once your tour is over enjoy the fabulous views of the Bay and the city of San Francisco.

San Francisco’s Chinatown

The Chinatown in San Francisco is said to be the largest in the world outside of Asia, and it is certainly the largest in North America! The streets in this part of San Francisco are far removed from the typical city streets and are full of restaurants and shops selling all kinds of weird and wonderful items! In the backstreets you will get to see how many of the people live here; the poverty is very evident considering San Francisco is such a wealthy city.

When Should You Visit San Francisco?

San Francisco is mild throughout the year so you could sensibly visit in the summer or the winter. Winters are on average wetter than the rest of the year though, but if you can stand the rain you’ll enjoy average highs of around 15C in January. July and August are the driest months, though you won’t be guaranteed clear days without any fog, as San Fran’s fog can roll in at any time!
