The Tourist Attractions of Colorado
The Rocky Mountains are one of Colorado’s major attractions. Running from north to south, through the western half of the state, the mountains feature fantastic scenic beauty and plenty of opportunities for enjoying the great outdoors. The mountains are accessible from numerous points across Colorado, but the Rocky Mountain National Park presents a good place for visitors to start.
Rocky Mountain National Park
The national park is the ideal place to get up close and personal with the Rocky Mountains. Visitors who enjoy hiking will find there’s an abundance of hiking trails here, totalling 359 miles (574 km). Though you’re unlikely to cover all of these you may prefer to set out backpacking to get to see more of the remoter areas of the park. Look out for wildlife and plant life here too.
Colorado’s Other National Parks
Although Colorado is most famous for the Rocky Mountains the state also contains three other national parks which are impressive in different ways. The Mesa Verde National Park is popular and features ancient cliff dwellings of the Ancestral Puebloan people. The park also has some lovely scenery to see too.
The Great Sand Dunes National Park features the tallest sand dunes in North America, standing at over 750 feet. This sandy landscape is one you probably wouldn’t associate with Colorado! Spectacular landscapes of a different kind can be seen at the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park where there is a 12 miles (19km) long scenic gorge.
Skiing in Colorado
As Colorado features the tallest peaks of the Rocky Mountains, and has a general abundance of mountains, there are many opportunities for skiing here. Aspen and Vail can both be found in Colorado and these two high profile resort towns and ski areas are probably the most famous in the USA. Aspen is usually considered the more upper class of the two, but Vail benefits from the largest mountain ski slopes in North America.
The USA’s most popular ski resort is also in Colorado. Breckenridge may not be as well known outside of the USA as Aspen or Vail but it is still the most popular!
Denver and Other Cities in Colorado
Denver and Colorado Springs are the two most famous and popular cities in Colorado. Denver is the capital of the state, and also the largest city. Situated at no less than a mile high this is a vibrant and lively city with lots to see and do. Colorado Springs is second to Denver in terms of size but still has many things to see and do and is popular as base for exploring some of Colorado’s other tourist hotspots.
