Named after Hertford in England, the city of Hartford in the USA is the capital of the state of Connecticut and is situated roughly centrally within this New England state. This attractive town is popular for its variety of historical attractions, buildings, museums, and culture.
Flights to Hartford
Tourists have several options for getting a flight to Hartford. The largest airport in the state is Bradley International Airport (airport code: BDL) and is situated about 20 minutes drive from downtown Hartford in the town of Windsor Locks. Flights to Hartford are available with several airlines from the UK all of which will have one or two connections. One stop flights to Hartford are offered through Air Canada, Delta Air Lines, KLM, US Airways, Air France and Northwest Airlines flying a variety of routes. A second option is to catch a flight to Boston instead. Logan International Airport will have numerous direct flights from the UK so may be better in terms of the cost of the flight and the schedule.

Hartford is a great city to visit if you’re interested in American history. Being amongst the first cities to be settled in what is now the United States of America, Hartford is certainly rich in history and culture and gives great insight into what life in the late 1600’s onwards was like.
Connecticut State Capitol
Being the capital city of Connecticut Hartford is home to the impressive state capitol building. Built in 1878 this is a National Historic Landmark and is open for tours throughout the year. The marble building has a beautiful gold dome on top.
Old State House
The original state house for Connecticut was built in 1796. This too is of course a National Historic Landmark and is one of the oldest state houses in the country.
Wadsworth Atheneum
Another ‘oldest’ is the Wadsworth Atheneum. This is the oldest public art museum in the USA and was founded in 1842. Through the years the Wadsworth has accumulated a very impressive collection that surpasses 45,000 pieces making it one of the best art museums in the country.
Historic Houses
Hartford was home to numerous historical figures including authors Mark Twain and Harriet Beecher Stowe. The Mark Twain House and Museum is where this famous author lived from 1874 to 1891 during which time he wrote The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. You can also visit the Harriet Beecher Stowe House and Library which is the home of this author best known for writing Uncle Tom’s Cabin.
The Governor’s Residence is another impressive home worth visiting. This was built in 1909 and guided tours are available by arrangement, or head to the Old Wethersfield area of Hartford where you can see over 100 historic homes including several that are open for tours.

Parks in Hartford
As well as historic buildings Hartford also features historic parks! Bushnell Park was the first publicly funded park in America and was designed by the same architect behind Central Park in New York City. Elizabeth Park is another worth seeing, and is famous for its beautiful rose garden.
When Should You Visit Hartford?
The humid subtropical climate in Hartford means visitors will find that summers are hot and humid while winters are cold and snowy. July is the hottest month of the year with an average high of 29.5C (85F). Rainfall is fairly consistent throughout the year, and during the summer thunderstorms can be quite common.
