The New England state of Connecticut is the third smallest state in the US in terms of land area, but with a population of around 3.5 million it’s one of the most densely populated. Connecticut is popular with tourists because this north eastern state has plenty of history and interesting attractions to share.
Flights to Connecticut
International flights to Connecticut land at the Hartford-Bradley International Airport (airport code: BDL). This is situated in the town of Windsor Locks and is the largest airport in the state. Flights to Connecticut from the UK are indirect requiring one or two connections. Delta Air Lines, Air Canada, Air France, Northwest Airlines, KLM, and US Airways all offer one stop flights to Connecticut from the UK. The routes these flights to Connecticut take differs with each airline but, for example, KLM flies via Amsterdam, and Air Canada flies via Toronto.
Connecticut Tourist Attractions
Connecticut has a rich history as the state was one of the first to be settled and amongst the first to ratify the United States Constitution; as such visitors who are interested in US history will find that Connecticut has many interesting places to visit.
Hartford
Hartford is Connecticut’s capital and although it’s not the largest city in the state there’s still plenty to see here. Named in honour of Hertford in England, the town was settled by the English in 1635. Amongst the historic buildings you can visit here is the first state capitol building – the Old State House, which is one of the oldest in the country, built in 1796. The current Connecticut State Capitol Building is a national historic site too as this was built back in 1878. Tours are available where you can get the chance to see the gold domed roof and the huge amounts of marble that were used for construction.
Fiction lovers will be interested to see the Mark Twain House and Museum which is where this famous author lived, and other interesting places include the first public art museum in the USA, Wadsworth Atheneum, and the Museum of Connecticut History.
New Haven
The city of New Haven isn’t as well known as its most famous attraction, Yale University, which attracts many thousands of visitors every year. You can tour the university as well as being able to visit several attractions on the grounds including the Peabody Museum of Natural History and the Yale University Art Gallery.
Other Connecticut Attractions
If you’re touring around the state there are numerous other towns and cities worth visiting. Amongst these are Norwalk, renowned for its aquarium, the Maritime Aquarium, and popular Lockwood Mathews Mansion Museum.
One of the quirky places in Connecticut worth visiting is the village of Mystic. Situated on the coast Mystic is quite a unique place and has a Seaport and Aquarium.
Connecticut also offers visitors some lovely scenery, beaches, wildlife, forests and more. There are numerous places where you can experience these including Rocky Neck State Park. This is situated on the coast and has some lovely beaches, hiking opportunities, camping, wildlife spotting, and more.
When Should You Visit Connecticut?
The Atlantic Ocean is largely influential when it comes to the climate in Connecticut, and though only a small state the weather can vary significantly from one end to the other. Summers are generally warm and pleasant, while winters are quite cold. Spring and autumn can be nice but the weather is changeable at these times of the year, however, many visitors do like to come in autumn to see the fall colours.
