Flights to New Haven
Places in Connecticut
The chances are you’ve heard of the famous Yale University, though you may not have heard of the city it’s located in. The historic city of New Haven is actually the second largest city in the state of Connecticut, and the sixth largest in the New England region, as well as being one of the oldest cities in the United States.
Flights to New Haven
Flights to New Haven arrive at the Tweed New Haven Regional Airport (airport code: HVN), located within the city limits of New Haven. There’s a public bus service to and from the airport. The only flight to New Haven from the UK with one connection stop is with U.S Airways, and they travel through Philadelphia. With 2 transfers, British Airways goes through Baltimore as well as Philadelphia, and Air Canada stops in Toronto and Philadelphia. Regardless of the airline, a flight to New Haven will always stop in Philadelphia first.
New Haven Tourist Attractions
New Haven is one of the oldest cities in the country, settled by English Puritans in the year 1638. The settlement grew quickly as only a year later an eight street grid plan was laid out, making this the first ‘planned’ city in the US. Right in the heart of this grid of streets was New Haven Green, and attraction that you can still see today.
New Haven Green
Today New Haven Green is still the heart of the historic city and a popular place for live music and other outdoor events. The green space covers 16 acres, and has seen a variety of uses, the most disturbing one being as the city’s main burial ground. For 150 years this practice continued until a new cemetery was established and the headstones were moved there. However, the remains of the dead were not moved and it’s estimated that between 5,000 and 10,000 people still remain buried under the grass of the New Haven Green.
Some of the buildings that have been constructed over the years on the Green are still here too including three historic churches, dating from the early 19th century. Center Church on the Green is the oldest, dating from 1639 and inside the crypt holds the remains of 137 identified people as well as the remains of around 1,000 people who are unidentified.
Yale University
Part of the world-renowned Ivy League, Yale University has the same prestige as places like Oxford University and it was established here in New Haven in 1701. The historic central campus is the part that most visitors will want to see, located in the centre of downtown New Haven, and covering an area of 1 square mile. Go to the Yale University Visitor Center before you start to look around as here you can pick up some information on the university and the sights you can see. There are many beautiful and historic buildings to see including Harkness Tower, built in the gothic style between 1917 and 1921.
Architecture and culture combine at the Yale University Art Gallery, and the Peabody Museum of Natural History at Yale University is worth a visit too.
Historic Neighbourhoods
As well as the history of downtown New Haven there are several other historic neighbourhoods in the city. Hillhouse Avenue is a Historic District, covering one of the most beautiful streets in the USA and home to many 19th century mansions. Another area is the Dwight Street Historic District where you can spend time wandering around enjoying the architecture.
