Florida Tourist Attractions
Walt Disney World and Orlando
There’s far more to Florida than just Disney World, but in reality this is the state’s (and one of the world’s) top tourist attractions. Born from what was once swampy land, Walt Disney World now has four theme parks – the Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and Animal Kingdom, plus a whole array of other attractions too including golf, an adult entertainment zone, shopping and much more.
The city of Orlando has really benefited from the growth of Disney, and now visitors can also enjoy theme parks including Sea World, Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure.
The Gulf Coast
Florida has a long coast on the Gulf of Mexico that is very popular with visitors too. Beautiful white sandy beaches and the warm sea make this a great family holiday destination. Top places include Clearwater, St Petes Beach and St Petersburg, plus the vibrant and culturally rich city of Tampa. Tampa is also home to one of Florida’s popular theme parks, Busch Gardens.
The Atlantic Coast
Across the other side of Florida is the Atlantic Ocean coast. There’s tons of variety here, from cities like Jacksonville and historic St Augustine at the northern end through to Cape Canaveral and the Kennedy Space Center, the famous Daytona Speedway, south down to Miami.
Miami
Miami is a popular destination in its own right that’s famous for being a lively and vibrant city with wonderful art deco architecture, lots of Latin influences, great beaches, and the starting point for a tour of the Keys. The Keys is a beautiful region where island (or key) after island are connected by some of the world’s longest bridges. There are about 1,700 islands in total, many with quaint towns and renowned for great diving.
The Everglades
Just to the west of Miami is the Everglades National Park. This is the atypical image of Floridian wilderness – swamps and alligators that are best seen from inside an airboat that skims the surface of this unique area.
When Should You Visit Florida?
For many visitors Florida is popular as a year round destination. Places like Disney World are popular throughout the year, even though during the summer is actually the state’s wet season. Florida is great in the winter too, particularly in the southern half of the state where the weather remains warm and sunny but not overly hot and humid. From August there’s always the threat of hurricanes.
