Miami is the largest city in the Southern US state of Florida. Situated in the south of Florida, Miami is renowned for its warm weather, endless beaches, art deco architecture, and for being the Cruise Capital of the World because so many cruise ships come and go from here. Miami is also the gateway to the Florida Keys and has access to the Everglades National Park.

Flights to Miami

The Miami International Airport (airport code: MIA) is just 8 miles from the centre of the city and is a major hub for flights. Coming from the UK there are direct flights to Miami with a couple of airlines, namely British Airways, Delta Airlines and Virgin Atlantic, or if you don’t mind a longer journey there’s more choice for one stop flights to Miami. US Airways flies via Philadelphia, and Delta Air Lines via Atlanta. Continental Airlines is another option.

Miami Tourist Attractions

Miami is great in the summer when its beaches are crowded and the streets are lively. It’s a cosmopolitan city with a reputation for fun, so many tourists come here to combine the beaches with the nightlife and entertainment, found in many different parts of the city.

Miami’s Beaches

Talking of Miami’s beaches there are numerous ones you can enjoy, and the beach parks are particularly popular. In Lummus Park Beach you can go topless, or to get that all over body tan visit Haulover Beach Park where nude sunbathing is allowed!

South Beach

Probably the most famous beach for tourists is South Beach. This is the name of both the beach and the neighbourhood, where you can enjoy the sun and sand by day and the famous art deco buildings by night. This is one of the lively parts of Miami and those art deco buildings have real character with their neon lights, lit up by night. If you stay in a hotel in this part of Miami you can make use of the beach, restaurants and nightlife.

Little Havana

Little Havana is another neighbourhood of Miami, and from the 1970s to the 1990s this was where the majority of Miami’s Cubans lived. Like many other neighbourhoods the demographics have become more diversified but this still has a real Latin American feel where you’ll find locals gathered on the streets and in the parks deliberating over a game of dominos!

Miami Beach

Miami Beach is actually termed as a separate city to Miami, and it has its own range of attractions. This is more like a beach resort city and it’s one of the most popular in the United States. You’ll find plenty of great hotels lining the beaches, and for shopping, this is the place to go!

Outside Miami

Miami is the gateway to the Florida Keys, so a popular holiday could include several nights in Miami followed by a drive down the Keys. The Everglades National Park is also close by and though most famous for alligators and air boats, there’s plenty more to see here too! Biscayne National Park is another – it’s the largest marine park operated by the National Parks Service and is home to 512 different fish species.

When Should You Visit Miami?

Summers are hot and stormy in Miami, and although this is the sunniest time of year it’s also the wet season from June to November. Miami is also within the hurricane belt so visitors should bear this in mind especially when planning a visit towards the end of summer and into the autumn. In the winter Miami is very pleasant, staying at an average high of 24C in January.
