The Olympics
Atlanta hosted the 1996 Summer Olympic Games and even though these were not a very successful games in terms of finance and popularity, parts of the city that were developed for the games are now ironically some of the most popular tourist attractions in Atlanta. The Centennial Olympic Park is at the hub of this tourist activity where you can enjoy free music concerts and other events during the summer, and a large ice skating rink in the winter.

Georgia Aquarium
Said to be the largest aquarium in the world, Georgia Aquarium is one of the city’s most popular attractions, popular with both children and adults. There’s a lot to see where with over 100,000 different species, set within huge tanks. There are several themed areas to the aquarium so you can see different habitats and the creatures that live within them.
World of Coca-Cola
Atlanta is home to the headquarters of Coca-Cola so there’s a factory here as well as a museum-like attraction where you can find out all about this soft drink giant. If you’re a fan of Coca-Cola you won’t want to miss the opportunity to try some of their products from around the world, and find out about the history behind this company.
Museums in Atlanta
In addition the museum at Coca-Cola Atlanta has a good variety of other museums too. If you’re travelling with children the Imagine It Children’s Museum would be a good choice, or there’s the Fernbank Science Center. For history try Atlanta’s Margaret Mitchell House and Museum or the Martin Luther King Jr National Historic Site. There is also the Atlanta History Center and the Atlanta Cyclorama and Civil War Museum.
Atlanta Parks and Gardens
Atlanta has some beautiful parks and gardens to enjoy too. You can visit the Atlanta Botanical Garden which is right next door to the city’s largest park, Piedmont Park. There is also the city’s zoo, Zoo Atlanta, which specialises in African animals and also has a Giant Panda exhibit.
When Should You Visit Atlanta?
Summers in Atlanta are hot and humid though being at a slightly elevated location this city doesn’t get as hot as some others in this part of the US. The average high in July is 32C (90F), but it can feel hotter with the high humidity levels. Summers are not always the best time to visit as afternoon thunderstorms are a common occurrence. To avoid rainfall, the best times to visit would be late spring and autumn.
