Augusta Tourist Attractions
The Masters
Every spring Augusta becomes the centre of attention for the golfing world as it’s here that the Masters tournament is held at the Augusta National Golf Club. The event attracts many thousands of spectators so if you’re not coming for the golf you’ll probably want to avoid visiting at this time of year!
The Augusta National Golf Club is a very exclusive club that has a private membership, so don’t expect to be able to play a round of golf while visiting!
Downtown Augusta
Away from the fairways there are a number of other things that visitors find appealing about Augusta. The historic downtown is a nice part of the city which has some older buildings, quirky shops, restaurants and monuments, making this a nice place to spend an afternoon and an evening.
Augusta Canal
Another part of the city’s history is the Augusta Canal. The city itself was founded in 1736, though the canal didn’t come until 1845 and was built to serve several purposes – to provide drinking water for the city, and so that the power of water could be used to drive the textile mills. Most canals of the world have become defunct, but not the Augusta Canal; it’s actually the only canal in the world to still be used for its original purpose!
It’s also popular for boat tours though, and you can take a trip along the canal starting from the Augusta Canal Heritage Area Interpretive Center, where there’s also a museum and exhibits on its history to see.
Riverwalk Augusta
Along with the canal there’s another watery attraction in Augusta, the Riverwalk. This is a public park that runs alongside the Savannah River and has riverside walks to enjoy. There are other attractions here too including a couple of the city’s museums – the Morris Museum of Art is one, as is the National Science Center’s Fort Discovery – a science centre and museum aimed at children.
When Should You Visit Augusta?
Augusta can be visited any time of the year thanks to its warm climate, though you may want to avoid the middle of summer when temperatures and humidity are high. June, July and August all see average highs around 32 or 33C, and these are some of the wettest months. Rainfall actually occurs throughout the year though, and peaks again from January to March. April and May are good times with less rain and warm to hot temperatures, as are September to November.
