Atlanta
Atlanta is one of Georgia’s top destinations, combining southern charm with the benefits of a modern day city. It’s the state’s capital and largest city and has numerous different attractions for tourists.
Being the capital of Georgia you’ll find the Georgia State Capitol in Atlanta. This impressive building was built in 1889 and is topped off with a large gold dome. You can go inside the state capitol and visit the museum which has been a feature of the building since its opening.
Georgia Aquarium is reputedly the largest aquarium in the world, and it’s situated here in Atlanta. This attraction is great for family fun with its thousands of marine life to see, or for something completely different there’s the World of Coca-Cola and the Coca-Cola factory.
Savannah
Savannah is the oldest city of Georgia and was settled by the British back in 1733. The city is popular today because it has managed to retain many of its historical buildings and makes a great place to visit to view the history and enjoy the coastal location. Savannah is home to one of the largest historic districts in the United States, so if you enjoy history you’re in for a real treat here!
Augusta
Best known for being the home of the US Masters Golf, Augusta has more than just a world famous golf course. This city also has its share of history, so visit here to see historic buildings and monuments, or come during the Masters and see the world’s best golfers!
Nature and Wildlife in Georgia
As well as the cities Georgia is a very beautiful state with many natural attractions to see. From the small resort town of Blue Ridge you can visit the mountains and head into the foothills to the Appalachian Trail. In the summer this region is full of boaters and fishers, enjoying the lake, and come autumn you’ll want to visit to see the beautiful ‘fall colours’.
Look out for wildlife and birds wherever you are in Georgia as there are always many to see, or head to a place where you’re guaranteed to see a large variety of species – the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge is home to many different reptiles including alligators, plus numerous bird species such as bitterns, cranes, egrets, and herons.
When Should You Visit Georgia?
With the humid subtropical climate of Georgia you can expect hot and humid summers that may be a little uncomfortable for some visitors. July is the hottest month with an average high of 32C (89F) in Atlanta, but with the humidity it always feels hotter. Spring, autumn and winter will be less humid, and winters are relatively mild.
