Places in Hawaii
Honolulu is the state of Hawaii’s largest and capital city and is situated on the island of Oahu, one of the 19 islands that make up the archipelago of Hawaii. This bustling city offers a fun variety of attractions including its famous beaches and surfing, as well as restaurants, shopping, culture, and family-friendly things to see and do.
Flights to Honolulu
There are many options for a flight to Honolulu from the UK as the city is home to Hawaii’s main international airport, the Honolulu International Airport (airport code: HNL). Honolulu Tourist Attractions
Waikiki Beach
Let’s start with what is probably Honolulu’s best known attraction, Waikiki Beach! Situated just to the south east of downtown Honolulu this is the city’s most popular beach and it’s lined with numerous hotels, tourist attractions and facilities. Waikiki Beach is long and sandy, stretching for 1.5 miles (2.4km), but because it’s the best known beach in Honolulu it’s also usually very crowded. By all means spend a day here, but you might want to visit some of Oahu’s other beaches if you want somewhere more secluded!
Honolulu Zoo
At one end of Waikiki is Honolulu Zoo. This is one of the top family attractions in the city and it’s home to a great assortment of animals, including the exotic and the unusual. Large animals like elephants, rhinos, giraffes and lions are also on display here.
Waikiki Aquarium
Keeping with the wildlife theme another family attraction is Waikiki Aquarium. This is actually the third oldest aquarium in the United States and so it has a great reputation. You’ll see not only hundreds of species from around the Hawaiian islands, but also those which come from all over the Pacific.
Diamond Head
Standing over Honolulu is Diamond Head. This piece of geology is a volcanic tuff cone and it’s a popular attraction for two reasons. You can hike to the top and then follow a fairly hairy trail that takes you to the edge of the crater, but you can also enjoy the impressive views over Honolulu from here.
Pearl Harbor
An attraction of a more solemn nature is Pearl Harbor, just outside Honolulu. The attack on Pearl Harbor during the World War 2 by the Japanese was what brought the USA into the war, and resulted in a huge loss of life. You can visit the harbour and the memorials including the USS Arizona Memorial. This marks the resting place of many of the crew who were killed on board this ship that sat in the harbour.
Museums in Honolulu
Most tourists probably aren’t visiting Honolulu to spend time inside museums but if you’re interested in the culture of Hawaii and Polynesia you should definitely spend time at the Bernice P Bishop Museum (aka Hawaii State Museum of Natural and Cultural History). This museum actually has the largest collection of Polynesian artefacts in the world.
