Hawaii is the 50th state of the USA and the only state, other than Alaska, not to be part of the contiguous United States. It’s a group of islands that lie in the Pacific Ocean, about 2000 miles (3,200 km) off the coast of California and is a popular tourist destination for both Americans and visitors from around the world.

Flights to Hawaii

Though there are numerous smaller airports in Hawaii the main gateway for international flights to Hawaii is the capital city and the Honolulu International Airport (airport code: HNL). From the UK all flights to Hawaii are indirect with one or two connections, depending on the airline. The most common route is to catch a direct flight to Los Angeles or San Francisco then transfer onto a flight to Hawaii from there. Continental Airlines, United Airlines, Air New Zealand, Hawaiian Airlines, Virgin Atlantic Airways, Northwest Airlines, American Airlines, British Airways, and Lufthansa all offer flights to Hawaii from the UK with a connection in either San Francisco or Los Angeles.

Hawaii Tourist Attractions

Hawaii is an archipelago that consists of 19 volcanic islands, six of which offer accessibility and services to tourists. Out of these six there are the main three: Hawaii, Oahu and Maui which between them easily attract the largest numbers of tourists. To avoid confusing the island of Hawaii with the state as a whole, this island is often referred to as the Big Island, as it is the largest of all the Hawaiian islands.

Hawaii is a wonderful destination to come for a relaxing holiday where you can sit back and relax on the beaches, soaking up the warm tropical sun, learning to surf, or simply enjoying the warm hospitality and Hawaiian culture. There’s also a great deal of spectacular scenery here that shouldn’t be missed, so here’s a quick run-down on all the main attractions of Hawaii…

Hawaii – The Big Island

Hawaii’s largest island is actually getting larger all the time because of volcanic activity, though you’re very unlikely to see it growing in front of your eyes! The island is home to some of the world’s most active volcanoes, and two of the world’s largest mountains, so as you imagine, the scenery on Hawaii really is amazing.

Despite being the largest island Hawaii doesn’t have the largest population. There are large untouched areas such as the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park which you can visit to see craters and volcanic landscapes, and visit the visitor centre and museum.

Oahu

The island of Oahu is the third largest but it’s the most populated. Oahu is home to the capital city, Honolulu, and because this is the main entry point for tourism to Hawaii, this is also the most popular island for tourists.

Honolulu is a vibrant city with shops, restaurants and tourist attractions, and also includes Hawaii’s most famous beach, Waikiki. As well as the bustling city there are quieter parts of Oahu where you’ll find beautiful and luxurious beach resorts.

Maui

Often given the accolade as the most beautiful Hawaiian island, Maui is the second largest island in the state. The landscapes here can be quite different to the Big Island as it features vineyards, rainforests, mountains and valleys, so it’s very lush and green on the whole. There are numerous towns and resorts on Oahu, but none anywhere near as large as Honolulu. Lahaina is the main tourist centre, or visit Wailuku with its historic buildings and proximity to the Iao Valley State Park.

When Should You Visit Hawaii?

Hawaii is full of many microclimates so you can find that the weather varies just from beach to beach here sometimes! In general there’s a tropical climate in Hawaii so there are warm temperatures throughout the year, ranging from the high 20s C to low 30s C for average highs. However Hawaii does have a rainy season that’s commonly from October to April.
