Places in Idaho
Set near the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, Boise is the capital city of the state of Idaho, and the largest city in the state too. It’s a good gateway for exploring the great outdoors that Idaho is so famous for, but offers several of its own attractions too.
Flights to Boise
Just outside the city centre is the Boise Airport (airport code: BOI), linked to the city via public buses and taxis. Though the airport has been expanded in recent years it’s not really an international airport and hence all flights to Boise will come via another US city. So from the UK flights to Boise will have either one or two stops and are available through numerous major world airlines. Virgin Atlantic for example has flights via New York, or KLM flies via Minneapolis, though there are several other airlines to choose from with different flight routes including United Airlines, Continental Airlines, Northwest Airlines, BMI, British Airways, and Air France.
Boise Tourist Attractions
Idaho State Capitol
As the capital of the state of Idaho, Boise is home to the Idaho State Capitol, an impressive building both inside and out that was completed in 1913. Like so many other state capitols this one is built in the neoclassical style and was actually modelled after the United States Capitol in Washington DC. In front of the building is a scale replica of the famous Liberty Bell, which can be rung by visitors!
Julia Davis Park
The 87 acre Julia Davis Park is in the centre of Boise and as well as being a nice park there are several of the city’s top attractions within its boundaries. Boise Art Museum is one of these attractions, featuring a good collection of contemporary and traditional art that’s by local as well as international artists. The park is also home to two other popular museums, the Idaho State Historical Museum and the Idaho Black History Museum. The former is actually the most visited museum in Boise, and makes an interesting visit.
Julia Davis Park also houses Zoo Boise, one of the city’s most family friendly attractions. This expanding zoo has many animals on display from around the world, and is building a great new Africa exhibit. Families with children may also like to visit the park’s Discovery Center of Idaho which is aimed at both adults and children with its slogan ‘Where families learn together’.
World Center for Birds of Prey
In addition to Zoo Boise there’s another opportunity to see wildlife in Boise, at the World Center for Birds of Prey. Shows and tours of this facility allow visitors to see the numerous birds of prey up close, including eagles, hawks and falcons.
Old Idaho State Penitentiary
A tourist attraction of a very different nature is Boise’s Old Idaho State Penitentiary. This was Idaho’s main prison for over a hundred years until it was closed in 1973. Now it’s a popular tourist attraction where you can tour the prison and grounds, see the cells and the gallows and learn about its history through the numerous exhibits on display.
When Should You Visit Boise?
