The main airport for the state is in the capital, called the Boise Airport (airport code: BOI), located just a short distance from the city centre. Flights to Idaho from the UK are indirect with at least one connection. Air France flies via Atlanta, while United Airlines flies via Denver. Many other airlines also offer flights to Idaho from the UK including Continental Airlines, Northwest Airlines, BMI, Virgin Atlantic, British Airways, and KLM.

Idaho Tourist Attractions

Idaho is a very popular destination with outdoors lovers due to its many different outdoor pursuits available here. The state may not spring to mind as a major tourist destination for visitors from outside the USA but if you enjoy whitewater rafting you may know of Idaho as one of the country’s top whitewater rafting destinations! This is just one of the top activities you can enjoy in Idaho.

Boise

As the location of Idaho’s main airport Boise is where most international visitors to Idaho will arrive. Though the state is best known for its recreation, Boise is a nice city with numerous attractions and is worth a day or two of your time. The Julia Davis Park is a popular place to visit as this park is home to Zoo Boise, Boise Art Museum, the Rose Garden, and Idaho Black History Museum. Another popular attraction in Boise is the Old Idaho State Penitentiary.

Craters of the Moon National Monument

The Craters of the Moon National Monument is one of Idaho’s most popular tourist attractions. The monument was named this in 1924 as they imagined the surface of the moon to resemble the landscape here. It’s very desolate and remote but the 7 mile long scenic road is a great way to get to see the best parts of it. The stops along this road have brief hikes that take you to some of the most interesting and scenic parts of this national monument.

Yellowstone National Park

Craters of the Moon is situated about half way between Boise and one of the USA’s most famous national parks, Yellowstone. Yellowstone is mostly located within the state of Wyoming, but there is a small portion here in Idaho. Travelling from the town of Idaho Falls, parts of the park such as the famous Old Faithful are within easy reach.

Skiing in Idaho

Idaho is home to one of the nation’s oldest ski resorts, Sun Valley, where the world’s first ski lift was installed. Sun Valley remains a top ski resort in the USA to this day, plus the area is popular during the summer for its hiking, fishing, white water rafting and more.

When Should You Visit Idaho?

With outdoor recreation being so popular in Idaho summer and winter are usually the best times to visit. Skiing season varies with the individual ski resorts but should start around December and may run in to March or beyond. Summers are quite warm in Idaho – the average high in Boise during July for example is in the low 30’s C.
