Places in Illinois
Chicago is the largest city in the state of Illinois, and the third largest city in the whole of the United States. This sprawling city has plenty to offer though the majority of visitors find themselves staying in the downtown core, where most of Chicago’s attractions are located.
Flights to Chicago
Chicago is home to the O’Hare International Airport (airport code: ORD) which some sources claim is the busiest airport in the world; it’s definitely a major hub for the United States and as a traveller this is a good news because it means many airlines offer flights to Chicago from the UK. The airport is a distance outside of the city centre and is accessible via subway. There are both direct and indirect flights to Chicago from London – direct flights are available with British Airways, BMI, Virgin Atlantic, Continental, and United Airlines.
Chicago Tourist Attractions
The Windy City is situated on the shores of Lake Michigan and despite being further to travel than New York from the UK, Chicago is rapidly becoming a rival to NYC for its shopping and as a short break destination. Shopping is one of the top attractions of Chicago, and there’s certainly plenty of it here, but there’s plenty more to see and do in Chicago too.
Chicago Shopping
There are shops everywhere in Chicago and numerous shopping malls to try out, but the top shopping street is called the Magnificent Mile. This is a shopper’s paradise, especially if you enjoy shopping (or window shopping!) in high end designer name stores such a Tiffany & Co, Ralph Lauren, Hugo Boss and more. It’s also one of the city’s older streets so features some lovely architecture to admire if you can pull yourself away from looking in the windows! The Magnificent Mile is a top place to stay in Chicago too as there are over 50 hotels here, and one of the best choices when it comes to dining with over 200 restaurants to choose from!
Though the Magnificent Mile is very popular Navy Pier is said to be Chicago’s most popular attraction. This is a centre for entertainment where shopping is combined with many other attractions such as amusements, cinemas, entertainment, restaurants, museums, and more.
Chicago Skyscrapers
New York may be well known for its skyscrapers, but Chicago was the original home of the skyscraper! There are some excellent tall buildings to enjoy when visiting Chicago and those that are open to the public have amazing views from their observation decks.
The Willis Tower (formerly called Sears Tower) was the tallest building in the world from 1973 to 1997 and is still the tallest building in the United States. From its Skydeck you can see for 50 miles on a clear day. There are also some very good exhibits up here which tell Chicago’s history. The third tallest building in Chicago is the John Hancock Tower and there are also fabulous views from the New Hancock Observatory and the open air viewing platform.
Museums in Chicago
Chicago is also well known for its museums and the city features many which are world-renowned. There’s the Field Museum that focuses on natural history and natural sciences; the Museum of Science and Industry Chicago is another; and for art lovers the Art Institute of Chicago should not be missed.
Shedd Aquarium
The huge Shedd Aquarium is particularly popular with families visiting Chicago as it is home to 2,100 different species. The Caribbean Reef themed area is really spectacular, as are the dolphins and whales in the Oceanarium section.
When Should You Visit Chicago?
There are four distinct seasons in Chicago so it’s usually fairly easy to choose the best time to visit. Summers are hot and humid, peaking in July with an average high of 29C, but summer is the wettest time of year. Late spring and early autumn are less humid and warm, whilst winters are cold and snowy.
