The United States of America is one of the biggest and most prolific countries in the world. For the UK tourist, it’s a place of variety and diversity. The USA comprises of 50 states and a federal district. The capital of the USA is Washing DC where the White House is located and the country is bordered by Canada to the north and Mexico to the south. The major cities that are often visited by tourists include Miami, New York, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Florida and Washington DC, although the Caribbean islands and Hawaii are also popular. Flights to the US vary in price depending on the time of year.
Flights
Flights to the US are common from the UK so you will be able to fly directly from any major international British airport, like Manchester, Birmingham and Heathrow. Booking in advance will give you a better deal although some locations like New York are always fairly expensive to get to because it is so popular. Holiday times and the New Year can also be expensive when flying to the USA, as people like to approach the sales and festivities. Booking accommodation in advance is also recommended. Airlines that fly to the US include Delta, American Airlines, Continental Airlines, Alaska Airways, Air Canada, Jet Blue, Lufthansa, British Airways, Air France, KLM, Virgin America, Iberia, Qantas, Island Air, SWISS, Eurasia, BMI, Air China, Virgin Atlantic, Cathay Pacific, TACA Flights and more. You should have a valid UK passport when entering and the US customs is usually fairly strict so do not be alarmed if you are questioned further.
Climate
The USA is a large country and therefore the temperature will vary greatly. The west coast including Los Angeles and Miami is known for being sunny and warm, whereas the south east and east are known for more moderate temperatures. Generally speaking the hottest months are July and August with some rainfall too – temperatures reach around 25 degrees centigrade and the coolest months are December and January (similar to the UK). It is always worth checking the specific city you are visiting to find out what the weather will be, although Los Angeles, Miami and Florida are all known for sunny weather.
What to do
The USA is full of activities to do. In New York visit the Empire State Building and the Statue of Liberty. Don’t forget to walk through Times Square, which is a favourite for New Years eve where a giant glitter ball is dropped from the times tower.
Florida is a very popular place with UK tourists because of Disneyland and Universal Studios – here you can see all the scenes from famous films like Jaws, ET and Back to the Future –it far surpasses any of the theme parks available in the UK.
In San Francisco visit the Golden Gate Bridge, which was built in 1937 is still one of the most amazing achievements in engineering to this day.
In Los Angeles visit Mann’s Chinese theatre and see the high end shops, but also go to The Getty Center which is an amazing museum full of art, photographs and manuscripts from Europe and the USA.
