Fort Wayne’s History and Architecture
Once you’ve discovered more about the history of Fort Wayne take a walk around the city centre. You’ll find a nice selection of architecture from different periods, not just one, including several National Historic Landmarks, like the Allen County Courthouse, built in the Beaux-Arts style. Lincoln Tower is a 1930s art deco building, and in the Forest Park Boulevard Historic District there are some nice colonial and Tudor revival homes.
To make sure you don’t miss any of the major landmarks you can do the self guided architectural tour. There are booklets available at the Fort Wayne city library to guide you.
Fort Wayne Museum of Art
Another major museum of Fort Wayne is the Museum of Art. This is an interesting art museum as it focuses only on American art, both modern and contemporary, and has a collection of Amish quilts and furniture.
Foellinger-Freimann Botanical Conservatory
The botanical gardens of Fort Wayne should appeal to all ages of visitors as there is a fun children’s play area here where the kids, and adults, can have a conversation with a talking tree! For more serious stuff, the gardens are indoor, and have 500 different species of plants. The cactus collection is impressive with 72 different kinds.
Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo
Children will also have fun at the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo. Although named a children’s zoo this isn’t only appropriate for younger children; all ages should appreciate the different attractions and the large collection of animals: there are over 1500 animals here. Other attractions include the zoo train, canoe rides, and a sky ride.
