Indiana Tourist Attractions
Indianapolis
With miles upon miles of farms and small rural communities taking up the majority of the state of Indiana, Indianapolis is very much at the centre of state life. This city is situated right in the heart of Indiana and as well as being the largest city in the state it’s also the capital. With a population approaching a million, Indianapolis is the 12th largest city in the country.
Outside of Indiana the city of Indianapolis is best known for motor racing as this is the home of the famous Indianapolis Motor Speedway. This and a good variety of other spectator sports are available to watch right through the year.
Indianapolis has some excellent museums and offers a selection of both modern and historical attractions. There is the Indiana State Capitol as an example of a historical attraction, which was completed in 1888 and is open at certain times for tours. Indianapolis is also home to several major monuments including the Congressional Medal of Honor Memorial, the Indiana War Memorial and the Soldiers and Sailors Monument.
Other Indiana Attractions
Although Indiana is one of the US states that does not have a ‘national park’ it does have a selection of places that are operated by the National Parks Service. The Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial is one of these and worth visiting if you’re interested in American history, as is the George Rogers Clark National Historical Park.
There are natural attractions in Indiana too including the Hoosier National Forest and the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore which has some great beaches to enjoy.
The Hoosier National Forest is an excellent place for hiking, or you can try out Indiana’s state parks where there’s hiking, birding, fishing, mountain biking, horse riding and more to do. Turkey Run State Park and Brown County State Park are two of the popular ones.
