Located in the exact centre of the state of Indiana, the city of Indianapolis is the state capital and the largest city in the state. Indianapolis is best known for being the home of the Motor Speedway though the city also has a selection of other attractions too.

Indianapolis is home to the main international airport for the state of Indiana so there’s usually a good selection of airlines offering flights to Indianapolis from the UK. The Indianapolis International Airport (airport code: IND) is located only a short drive outside of the city centre. Flights to Indianapolis from the UK always involve one connection as there are no direct flights, but there are a good number of airlines to choose from. United Airlines has a flight via Washington, or Air France goes via Atlanta. Delta Airlines has a connection in Cincinnati, or a US Airways flight to Indianapolis goes via Philadelphia. British Airways, Virgin Atlantic and Continental also offer flights to Indianapolis from the UK.

Indianapolis Motor Speedway
Probably the most famous thing about the city of Indianapolis is the Speedway. This huge motor racing circuit has the largest seating capacity of any sporting venue in the world, being able to accommodate about 400,000 people. It’s the venue of the famous Indy 500 which takes place here annually and was home to the United States Grand Prix from 2000 to 2007. If there’s a race being held when you’re visiting Indianapolis it may be a fun time to visit the Speedway, otherwise tour the Speedway Hall of Fame Museum which is said to have the world’s largest collection of racing cars and memorabilia.
Indianapolis Museum of Art
One of the oldest art museums in the country, the Indianapolis Museum of Art houses over 50,000 pieces of art ranging from traditional to modern. There are local artists showcased here and the art covers all forms including drawings, sculptures, paintings, ceramics and textiles. Rather than just a standard gallery, the museum also has exhibits that educate on art history including such things as art from ancient Egypt and the Chinese Ming Dynasty.
Indianapolis Zoo
One of the top family attractions in Indianapolis is the city’s zoo. Set just outside the centre of the city the zoo is well liked because of its focus on different ecosystems of the world, including oceans, forests, deserts and more. One feature that’s unique to the Indianapolis Zoo is a dome built for watching dolphins underwater.
Conner Prairie Living History Museum
Another popular family attraction in Indianapolis is the Conner Prairie Living History Museum. Like most museums of this kind visitors will be treated to talks and demonstrations by costumed staff, showing you what life was like in Indiana in the 1800s. The village includes reconstructed buildings from the period such as an old schoolhouse, period houses and log cabins.
When Should You Visit Indianapolis?
Indianapolis does not usually suffer extremes of weather so in effect it’s a city that you can visit at most times of the year. For drier and warm weather the months of October and November are very pleasant. Summers are warm and humid, with temperatures reaching the 30’s C (86F), while winters are fairly cool and spring time is changeable.
