Iowa is a state in the Midwest of the United States, in an area known as the American Heartland. Often discounted by international tourists due to its reputation for being a farming state, Iowa does actually have some great places to visit, and would make an interesting alternative to some of the country’s top tourist destinations.

Flights to Iowa

Iowa has a number of large and small airports but generally the main entry point for international flights to Iowa would be the Des Moines International Airport (airport code: DSM) in Iowa’s capital and largest city. Iowa Tourist Attractions

Des Moines

Des Moines is undoubtedly the main attraction when it comes to tourism in Iowa. The state’s capital and largest city is surprisingly cosmopolitan and offers a god variety of things to see and do. Des Moines has historical and modern attractions including grand and impressive buildings like the Iowa State Capitol.

Recently the domed roof has been re-gilded again, so it looks shiny and new as it would have done when the building was first constructed. Many people call this one of the most beautiful State Capitol buildings in the USA, striking for its uncommon brick façade whereas most state capitols look like the White House with their whitewashed exteriors. You can see the inside of the State Capitol via a free tour that lasts anywhere from one hour to 90 minutes.

Another of the city’s top historical attractions is Terrace Hill. The Governor and First Lady of Iowa live in this home built in 1869; even so, it is open for tours.

Cedar Rapids, Sioux City and more

Des Moines may be the state capital and largest city in Iowa but this rural state does have some other large cities too. Cedar Rapids and Sioux City are two of the better known ones. Cedar Rapids is Iowa’s second largest city and offers several museums and an attractive downtown, while Sioux Falls has some beautiful parks in its city limits. Iowa City was originally the state capital and its top tourist attraction is the original state capitol building.

Amana Villages

Away from the cities of Iowa a more simple and quiet pace of life can be discovered in the Amana Villages (also called the Amana Colonies). This is one of the top attractions in Iowa where you can see the villages that were built by German Pietists in the 1850’s. They lived here until the 1930’s and now this popular attraction includes some great restaurants and craft shops.

When Should You Visit Iowa?

Autumn is usually the best time to visit Iowa because the temperatures are warm and the threat of tornadoes that is prevalent during the spring and summer has usually passed by now. Summers themselves are hot and humid, but winter in comparison is quite cold, thanks to the humid continental climate.
