Places in Kansas
Kansas City is situated in the Great Plains region of the United States. It’s a twin city in that there’s a Kansas City both in Kansas and in the neighbouring state of Missouri. This is essentially one large city though, split by the river and the state line, however, the majority of the city is situated on the Missouri side.
Flights to Kansas City
Kansas City International Airport (airport code: MCI) is situated on the Missouri side of the city though it’s not a long drive by taxi or rental car across the river. From the UK flights to Kansas City are indirect, and can be either one or two stops depending on the airline. BMI has a flight to Kansas City from London via Chicago, or Air France flies via New York. United Airlines, Continental Airlines, British Airways, Virgin Atlantic Airways, Delta Air Lines, and US Airways, also offer flights to Kansas City.
Kansas City Tourist Attractions
Despite being named ‘Kansas’ City the majority of this city, and also most of its tourist attractions are actually located across the river on the Missouri side. There’s only a state line and a river between the two though so you could happily spend your nights in a hotel on this side and travel over to see the Missouri attractions whenever you wanted to. You’ll find that the Kansas side of the city is attractive anyway, and obviously quieter, so this makes a nice place to stay, plus there are a few things to see and do here too.
Rosedale Arch
If you’ve never seen the Arc de Triomphe in Paris now is your chance! The Rosedale Arch in Kansas City is an exact replica, though it’s scaled down in size. Like the original in Paris the Rosedale Arch was built in dedication to those who fought in wars, specifically men from Kansas City who fought in World War 1.
Strawberry Hill
Kansas City has some great historical neighbourhoods including Strawberry Hill that was established in the 1800s. It became mainly a neighbourhood for immigrants from countries like Croatia and Slovenia, and much of that heritage can still be found here today in the eastern European shops and bakeries that still exist. If you come up to Strawberry Hill you’ll see why this area was chosen for development – it had excellent views over the rivers. There are still some of the original Queen Anne style Victorian homes here to admire.
Huron Indian Cemetery
You may not usually associate a cemetery with being an attraction but the Huron Indian Cemetery has an interesting story. It’s now officially called the Wyandot National Burying Ground and it was first established in 1843. It’s believed that there are around 800 people buried here, though only a small number of the graves are actually marked. The cemetery has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places due to its historical importance.
When Should You Visit Kansas City?
Autumn is usually a fairly good time to visit Kansas City as you’re less likely to experience sever weather at this time of the year. Spring is renowned for the possibility of tornadoes (though be aware that tornadoes can actually strike at any time of the year), and summers are hot and humid and can be quite stormy, while winters are prone to ice storms and temperatures are cool.
