Kentucky Tourist Attractions

Kentucky is not as full of tourist attractions as some US states though it does offer a mix of interesting cities and interesting scenery, the most popular of which are Louisville, Frankfort, and Mammoth Cave National Park.

Louisville

This is the largest city in Kentucky and it’s home to one of the state’s top tourist attractions, the Kentucky Derby. Taking place on the first Saturday in May, this famous day of horse racing is complemented by many other events and festivities happening around the city. Whether you’re here during the Derby or not, visit the Kentucky Derby Museum to find out more about its history.

Another museum to visit in Louisville is the Louisville Slugger Museum. One of the city’s top landmarks stands right outside the building, and it’s a giant size replica of a baseball bat, the world’s largest!

Frankfort

The city of Frankfort is quite different to Louisville. This is the capital of the state of Kentucky and offers numerous historical attractions. There is the Old and new State Capitol buildings – the old one is a Greek Revival style and was used for the seat of government between 1831 and 1910, when it was decided a more modern state capitol should be used. The new state capitol now acts as the seat of government and this Beaux Arts building has interesting exhibits inside.

Amongst the other historical buildings in Frankfort is one designed by famous US architect Frank Lloyd Wright. It’s called the Zeigler House and was designed and constructed for the Reverend Jesse R Zeigler.

Houses of a very different style can be seen in Frankfort too – Georgian Revival for example can be seen at the Berry Hill Mansion, and there’s Liberty Hall which was built back in 1796 for John Brown, Kentucky’s first senator.

Mammoth Cave National Park

The only National Park in Kentucky is one of the US’s more popular ones. Mammoth Cave is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and it’s home to the longest known cave system in the world. Its caves spread for over 360 miles under the ground and are home to over 130 species. Visitors to the park can take cave tours, though these only cover a very small area when considering just how large the cave system is.

Kentucky also has several state parks and a historic park – Natural Bridge State Park is popular, as is the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area.

When Should You Visit Kentucky?

Kentucky’s humid subtropical climate gives the state hot and humid summers, but cold winters. The summer humidity can be uncomfortable when average high temperatures get up into the low 30’s C (high 80’s F), so spring and autumn may be better times to visit.
