The city of Lexington is the second largest in the state of Kentucky and it’s nicknamed Horse Capital of the World. Officially the city is called Lexington-Fayette Urban County, though it’s generally known just as Lexington and as well as many horse-related attractions, Lexington has lots more to see and do too.

Lexington Tourist Attractions

Lexington’s Equestrian Attractions

Lexington has long been associated with horses and is home to some of the United States’ most famous horse racing tracks. The Red Mile Harness Track is the oldest in the city, and the second oldest in the USA, so it has plenty of history and offers something a little different to the typical horse racing events – horses take part in harness races where they pull two-wheel carts. Keeneland is the other historic racing track in Lexington, open since 1936 and has two racing events annually in April and October. This is also where large parts of the movie ‘Seabiscuit’ were filmed.

The Kentucky Horse Park isn’t an historical offering, but it does have plenty to attract the visitors anyway. This is several attractions in one, educating visitors about horses and the world of racing, and it’s also a working farm.

Lexington’s Historical Attractions

Aside from the horse-related historical attractions, Lexington does have a good number of historic buildings. The city is quite old in American terms, as it was established in 1775, and some of the earlier constructions do still exist today. Henry Clay was a politician and lawyer, and his original law office can be seen in downtown Lexington, dwarfed by some of the buildings surrounding it! Clay’s estate is also a popular and famous attraction. It’s called Ashland and was named after the many ash trees that stand on the property. The original home was built starting 1806 but was demolished later and rebuilt by 1857. It’s now a house museum and is open for tours.

The Fayette County Courthouse is another major landmark of Lexington and though it’s no longer used as the courthouse it is still a tourist attraction as it’s home to the Lexington History Center. This centre incorporates four different museums: the Isaac Scott Hathaway Museum, Lexington Public Safety Museum, Lexington History Museum, and Kentucky Renaissance Pharmacy Museum.

There are more historic houses too that you can visit while in Lexington, including the Hunt-Morgan House, the Waveland State Historic Site, and the Mary Todd Lincoln House.

When Should You Visit Lexington?

Spring and autumn can be good times to visit Lexington, particularly October as this is the driest month on average and has warm temperatures with an average around 20C. Winters are mild to cool, and though summers are hot this is the wettest and most humid time of year.
