Louisville Tourist Attractions
Kentucky Derby Festival
Louisville’s main attraction, and one that really puts the city in the spotlight, is the famous Kentucky Derby. This festival attracts thousands of visitors from the rest of the United States, and from across the world, and takes place in April and May each year. The actual Kentucky Derby is just one element of the larger festival that occurs over a period of two weeks and includes many events that are often fun for the whole family. There’s a thrilling air show called Thunder Over Louisville providing a day of excitement that culminates in a huge fireworks display. The Pegasus Parade is a large parade that has marching bands, decorated floats and often celebrities taking part, and there’s the Great Steamboat Race too.
Visiting Louisville during the Kentucky Derby Festival really is a good idea as you get to enjoy so many other events too, and whether or not you come at this tie of the year you should take time to visit the Kentucky Derby Museum where you can find out more about the history of this famous event.
The Louisville Slugger Museum and Factory
Along with the Derby another thing that Louisville is famous for is the Louisville Slugger. If you know anything about baseball you will no doubt have heard of the Slugger (a baseball bat) whose namesake is the city. This is the Official Bat of Major League Baseball and you can see the world’s largest baseball bat right outside the museum. This huge bat is one of the city’s famous landmarks and it stands propped up by the building.
Louisville’s Museum Row
The Louisville Slugger Museum is situated on the city’s Museum Row along with several other popular museums. Another sports related museum is the Muhammad Ali Center. The boxer, Ali, lived in Louisville and the museum features memorabilia of his life. Museums of a different nature include the Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft, the Louisville Science Center, and the Frazier Historical Arms Museum.
Outdoor Activities in Louisville
Louisville has a number of attractive parks if you want to escape the cityscape for a while. The city park system was designed by Frederick Law Olmstead, who is considered to be the Father of American Architecture. Some of the great city parks include the riverside Waterfront Park, plus Ashland Park and Iroquois Park.
When Should You Visit Louisville?
The spring, when the Kentucky Derby is on, is a good time to visit Louisville as the weather and temperatures are usually very pleasant and warm. If you’re not interested in the Derby though you’re probably better off avoiding that time of year and visiting when the city is a little quieter. Summer s can be quite hot and humid though, and while winters are mild there can be snowfall.
