Louisiana is a state in the Southern United States. It’s a state that offers lots of history and culture, particularly in its best known city, New Orleans though Louisiana has more than just the Big Easy on offer!

Flights to Louisiana

Louisiana has numerous airports though the best for international flights to Louisiana is in the largest city, New Orleans, and the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (airport code: MSY), located just a short drive from the city. There are no airlines offering direct flights to Louisiana from the UK at this time, so you’ll need to connect through another US city first. There are many airlines to choose from though including Continental, US Airways, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, British Airways, BMI, and Virgin Atlantic who all offer flights to Louisiana from the UK with one connection.

Louisiana Tourist Attractions

New Orleans

Louisiana’s largest city is also its top tourist attraction. New Orleans has long been attracting visitors, mostly to its charming French Quarter, and despite all the horrors of Hurricane Katrina this city now appears to be fully open to tourism once again.

The old 18th century architecture of the French Quarter is definitely the main draw in this Louisiana city, but this combined with its southern charm and hospitality make NO an inviting destination. The French Quarter is a lovely area to wander around, enjoying its shops, galleries and restaurants, and by night it really comes alive with live music and a vibrant atmosphere.

Baton Rouge

Baton Rouge is the capital of Louisiana and comes second to New Orleans as a tourist destination. In fact it’s close enough that if you’re staying in New Orleans you could come to Baton Rouge for a day trip. Baton Rouge has plenty of southern history and charm too. The Louisiana State Capitol Building is its best known landmark. This is the tallest state capitol in the USA and was built in 1929. In keeping with this period of architectural history, the state capitol is a fine example of an art deco design, and its tower stands 34 stories high.

The original Louisiana state capitol is also a top attraction. It’s very different to the new one as this is a 19th century castle!

Natchitoches

If you’re interested in southern history then you should definitely visit Natchitoches while in Louisiana. This is the oldest settlement that was part of the Louisiana Purchase, when the United States purchased a huge amount of land from the French in 1803. It has a great Historic District that’s similar in many ways to New Orleans’ French Quarter, so makes a good alternative.

When Should You Visit Louisiana?

Louisiana can really be visited at any time of the year thanks to its mild climate; however, summertime may be a little too hot and sticky for some tastes! Louisiana has a typical southern climate that’s hot and humid, with long summers and short winters. For a quieter visit you could happily come in January when the average high temperature is a pleasant 17C (64F). Rainfall happens throughout the year so can’t really be avoided no matter time you visit Louisiana.
