Flights to New Orleans
Places in Louisiana
New Orleans is the largest city in the southern US state of Louisiana. Despite suffering plenty of damage from Hurricane Katrina, this is still Louisiana’s top tourist destination, and is now once again very open to tourism.
Flights to New Orleans
New Orleans is home to Louisiana’s main international airport, the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (airport code: MSY). It’s situated in the suburb of Kenner, about 10 miles from the city centre and is linked by taxi and airport shuttle services. From the UK there are no direct flights to New Orleans though there are plenty of airlines offering one stop flights, usually travelling first via another US city such as New York, Atlanta or Chicago. Amongst the airlines are Virgin Atlantic, Continental, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, US Airways, BMI, and British Airways, all offering one stop flights to New Orleans.
New Orleans Tourist Attractions
The French Quarter
There’s no doubt that the most popular and famous attraction of New Orleans is its French Quarter, and whether you’re staying in the city for just a few days or a week you’re going to be spending the majority of your time here. By day it’s a lively place and you have the opportunity to wander around the famous streets, including Bourbon Street and Royal Street. Browse the many attractive shops and galleries, and spend time enjoying a meal or just a drink on one of the many cafés and restaurants that line the streets.
At night the French Quarter really comes into its own. The streets are packed with both locals and tourists who have come here to have a good time, and there’s always a real party atmosphere, whether or not its Mardi Gras time!
There are many bars and clubs where you can enjoy a night of live music, and by far the busiest and noisiest street is Bourbon Street.
For some of the best colonial architecture make sure you check out Chartres Street, whilein Royal Street there’s a slightly more upmarket feel to the boisterous Bourbon Street!
Jackson Square and the Mississippi River
At the edge of the French Quarter, where land meets the Mississippi River, is Jackson Square. This historic square was once the centre of city life and features the old colonial city hall, the Cabildo, which is now a museum. The St Louis Cathedral is also located here.
You can walk along the Mississippi near here or better still take a steamboat ride on the authentic Natchez Riverboat which departs twice a day and travels the full length of the city.
The Central Business District
Away from the historic parts of New Orleans, the city still has much to offer. The CBD is home to several attractions including the Superdome, where most famously the New Orleans Saints American Football team play. You can tour the Superdome when there are no events occurring.
The Audubon Aquarium of the Americas is another top attraction in the CBD, plus there are numerous hotels, restaurants and shops in this part of New Orleans too.
When Should You Visit New Orleans?
New Orleans can be visited at any time of the year as the subtropical climate means it stays mild throughout the year. Summers are hot and very humid, so may be uncomfortable for some visitors, and although rainfall occurs year round summer is the wettest time. At an average high of 33C (91F), July and August are the hottest months, and January the coolest; but at an average high of 16.5C (62F) it’s a pleasantly warm temperature.
