Not to be confused with Bangor in Wales, or any of the other cities with the name of Bangor in the US for that matter, this Bangor is the third largest city in the New England state of Maine. Situated inland from the coast, on the Penabscot River, Bangor is really quite a small city with a lot of charm.

Flights to Bangor

Three miles outside of the city is the Bangor International Airport (airport code: BGR), but despite the title this isn't really an international airport since all flights to Bangor are domestic, and hence you won’t get a direct flight to Bangor from the UK. American Airlines and Virgin Atlantic both have the same flight to Bangor with a single connection in New York City. A flight with United Airlines is another option, but you'll have to stop in Toronto and then again in Philadelphia. Average duration of flights to Bangor are around 14 hours long. There is public transit to and from the airport, as well as taxis and rental cars.

Bangor Tourist Attractions

Though this is the third largest town in Maine, Bangor has that New England charm with a population of only around 30,000 people, and if you’re a fan of Stephen King’s stories you’ll probably feel quite familiar with Bangor, or at least its alter ego, Derry, already! You’re unlikely to run into any creepy clowns, but you may recognise some parts of the town as they’ve been used for filming locations, and the famous author lives in Bangor himself.

Landmarks and Architecture

Most of the ‘attractions’ in Bangor are architectural landmarks as the city has many 19th century preserved buildings to see. Thomas Hill Standpipe is one of the most famous landmarks of the city – it’s a water tower that was built in 1897, and surprisingly it is still in use as a water tower today. Usually four times a year the observation deck of the water tower is opened for tours, and from the top you can get some great views over Bangor. Stephen King’s home, by the way, is not far from the water tower, and is another popular landmark. It’s an Italianate style mansion with the kind of architecture you would expect from a writer of his genre, including creepy wrought iron fencing with bats and spider webs!

You can also wander around the residential streets to see many other historic homes as there are examples of homes dating from Victorian times, as well as Greek revival and colonial revival houses.

Two churches are also prominent landmarks in Bangor; St John’s Catholic Church, built in 1855, and Hammond Street Congregational Church built in 1833.

Maine Discovery Museum

Away from the street scene is a popular museum, named Maine Discovery Museum, which is the largest children’s museum in the region. It has lots of exhibits that kids in particular will find interesting and fun, including a life size model beaver dam.

When Should You Visit Bangor?

The warmest weather in Bangor occurs in July and August when average highs are around 25 to 26C, and either side of these months temperatures are warm too. You may experience rainfall at this time of year, like any other time, but in the winter months the rain falls as snow, and usually a lot of it! Winters are fairly cold too, wit an average high of just -2.4C in January.
