Maine Tourist Attractions
Maine is an attractive and interesting US state to visit and has quite a variety of attractions on offer. It’s often associated with quaint villages, rugged coastlines and lighthouses, and spectacular fall colours, but Maine has even more to offer than all this!
Portland
The largest city in Maine is Portland, but with a population of only around 65,000 Portland is really quite a small city and being compact in size it’s a pleasure to walk around in the summer especially. The main attraction of Portland is its historical buildings. The city was first settled in 1633 so it’s a very old city by American standards, and features an assortment of buildings from different periods in its history. The Old Port is a very popular area with both tourists and locals as it features some lovely boutique shops, galleries, cafés, bars and restaurants within its 19th century streets. Portland Head Light and Museum is also one of the city’s top attractions, plus there are museums and historic houses here too.
Augusta
Even smaller in size than Portland is Augusta, the capital city of Maine. This city really has a small town feel with its population of less than 20,000 people, making this a friendly and laid back place to visit. Augusta also has historical buildings of interest including the Maine State House which is the state capitol for Maine. Old Fort Western is another attraction and it’s the oldest surviving fort in North America having been built in 1754. The Maine State Museum is also popular.
Acadia National Park
Maine is full of fabulous scenery and the Acadia National Park is a great place to see some of it. It features both coastlines and forests and plenty of wildlife. There are actually reputed to be over 40 species of mammals in this national park including North American favourites such as black bear, coyotes, moose, chipmunks, deer and more.
Acadia National park is the only national park in Maine, and in fact the only national park within the New England region. The gateway to the park is the village of Bar Harbor; a cosmopolitan mix of quaint and upmarket, this village features many excellent restaurants, plus bars and places to stay.
When Should You Visit Maine?
Winters are cold and damp in Maine so not the best time to visit this US state. Summers on the other hand are warm and humid, reaching average highs in the mid 20’s C (high 70’s F) in August. Autumn is a popular time because of the fall colours, and temperatures are mild during this time.
