Though a relatively small state in the Mid Atlantic region of the United States, Maryland actually has a lot to offer visitors. Its nickname, America in Miniature, is reflective of the fact that this state is very diverse.

Flights to Maryland

For a flight to Maryland you have the choice of two international airports: the Baltimore-Washington International (airport code: BWI), and the Washington Dulles International Airport (code: IAD). Either of these is good for travelling to Maryland, though consider which is closest to your final destination before making a choice. Both airports accept international flights to Maryland from the UK with numerous different airlines, and direct or indirect routes. Fly direct to Dulles with British Airways, United Airlines, and Virgin Atlantic. Flights to Maryland’s Baltimore Airport are available direct from the UK only with British Airways, though there are numerous other airlines offering indirect flights to Maryland.

Maryland Tourist Attractions

From charming historic towns, to large cities, and plenty of wonderful scenery, Maryland certainly does have a diverse range of attractions that should appeal to visitors of all ages and tastes.

Annapolis

Annapolis is the capital city of the state of Maryland and actually served as the temporary capital of the United States between 1783 and 1784. The Maryland State House which was used as the United States Capitol Building during that time still stands today and is still in use as the Maryland State Capitol, making this the oldest state capitol in the country.

As well as this historic building Annapolis has many others to see that date from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. These include beautiful period homes that have been restored and decorated with period furnishings that are now open to the public for tours, such as the Hammond-Harwood House and William Paca House.

Chesapeake Bay

The largest natural feature of Maryland is Chesapeake Bay. This huge bay is actually the third largest estuary in the world once famous for its amazing abundance of crabs, shellfish and other fish. Over farming over decades caused problems but this situation is now reverting back. Chesapeake Bay is one of Maryland’s top tourist attractions as it has lots to offer. There are many quaint towns that line its shores, and numerous beaches where you can spend a day.

Annapolis is actually on Chesapeake Bay and because of the easy access to the bay Annapolis has become one of the country’s top sailing destinations. Sailing and other water sports are very popular within the bay.

Baltimore

Baltimore is a far larger city than the capital of Maryland and it’s the largest city in the state. It’s a popular place for tourists though with its harbour and numerous attractions including the National Aquarium and the Baltimore Maritime Museum.

The historic ship USS Constellation is moored here too while on land the historic neighbourhood of Fell’s Point is attractive.

Natural Attractions in Maryland

As well as Chesapeake Bay Maryland has numerous other popular natural attractions including parks and great scenery. Annapolis Rock is a popular spot for rock climbers and it’s reached via a part of the famous Appalachian Trail. Deep Creek Lake is very scenic with its mountain and lake scenery and a great resort with spa to enjoy, and if you like the mountains, Catoctin Mountain Park is perfect for hiking, camping, and fishing.

When Should You Visit Maryland?

Because winters can be cool and damp summer is usually the best time to visit Maryland. The average high in July is 31C (91F) but with high humidity levels this may feel a little uncomfortable for some visitors.
