Boston is the capital of the US state of Massachusetts and the largest city in the state. Boston’s Logan International Airport (airport code: BOS) is one of the busiest airports in the United States so there are usually plenty of airlines offering flights to Boston from the UK. The airport is situated in the East Boston area and there are public buses, a subway, and a shuttle bus service to get you into downtown. Travellers can catch a direct flight to Boston from the UK with British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, and American Airlines, or a one stop flight to Boston is available with many other airlines including US Airways, United Airlines, BMI, Aer Lingus, Icelandair, and Delta Air Lines.

The Freedom Trail
For those visitors who are interested in the rich history of Boston the Freedom Trail is a must-do attraction. This part of the United States is great for history buffs as it was in Massachusetts that the Pilgrim Fathers first landed to start their new lives in the New World. The Freedom Trail is a walking tour that you can do self-guided by following the clearly marked red bricks that take you on a tour of 16 different historical attractions over the course of about 2.5 miles. Among the 16 stops on the tour are the Massachusetts State House, the Benjamin Franklin Statue the site of the Boston Massacre, and Copp’s Hill Cemetery.
Museums in Boston
Boston’s museums allow you to explore the city’s rich history in more detail too, though some of the city’s most popular museums are science based. The Museum of Science combines scientific exhibits with more than 100 animals and is popular with children of all ages. Also part of this museum is the Charles Hayden Planetarium.
The Museum of Fine Arts is another of Boston’s best museums. It actually houses one of the largest and most comprehensive art collections in North America.
New England Aquarium
The New England Aquarium in Boston has one of the largest tanks in the world and features some amazing exhibits including a Caribbean coral reef that houses sharks, turtles, and many varieties of fish. Other exhibits include the chance to see numerous different penguin species.
Franklin Park Zoo
Keeping with the nature theme is Boston’s Franklin Park Zoo. This is one of the oldest zoos in the USA and has over 220 species of animals from around the world. The butterfly exhibit is very memorable as it features over a thousand butterflies.
When Should You Visit Boston?
Summers are usually the most popular time for visiting Boston when temperatures are fairly hot and humid reaching highs of around 28C (82F) in July and August. For a quieter visit come in late spring or early autumn, and unless you like cold and snowy weather avoid winter in Boston!
