Places in Michigan
Detroit is situated within the US state of Michigan and it’s the state’s largest city. Known as Motor City because of its long association with the motor car, and as Motown because of its association with music, Detroit has moved more away from its industrial roots recently and is becoming more and more popular as a tourist destination.
Flights to Detroit
Detroit has its own airport, the Detroit Metro Airport (airport code: DTW) that handles most international flights to Detroit. The airport is around a 20 minute drive to the west of the city centre. There is public transit available, as well as taxi services to take you to and from the airport. Most flights to Detroit have 1 connection, and are available with several different carriers. The only direct flight to Detroit is with Delta Air Lines from London Heathrow, or a cheaper option may be a one stop flight to Detroit with Delta via Atlanta. Air France also offers a flight via Atlanta. Alternatively, a flight through Washington is available with United Airlines or British Midland.
Detroit Tourist Attractions
Detroit is thought of as an industrial city but following years of revitalisation Detroit has emerged from its past as a popular tourist destination, offering an alternative to other large cities in the Midwest region of the United States such as Chicago. Detroit does have its long association with the motor industry and several of the attractions are motor related, yet this isn’t all that Detroit offers. Many impressive buildings were constructed during the heyday of the city and today they stand alongside more modern skyscrapers. This historical architecture is one of the city’s selling points.
People Mover
When you arrive in Detroit one of the first things you might notice is the lack of public transport. As Detroit was built on the motor industry just about everybody had a car in this city and so public transport was an afterthought. The People Mover is one exception but it only really covers the centre of the city. This is an elevated rail system that does a 3 mile loop going through thirteen stations along the way. A loop takes about 15 minutes to complete and makes a good way to see some of the city, and of course it’s a good way to get around the centre.
The Henry Ford and Henry Ford Estate
The Henry Ford Estate, called Fair Lane, where the man behind Ford and the motor car lived, is situated in Dearborn within the Detroit Metropolitan Area. It’s been preserved as a house museum and historical landscape and is open to the public.
Also in Dearborn is The Henry Ford. This is the USA’s largest indoor-outdoor history museum and a popular and interesting attraction where many items from the past that were of historical significance have been preserved. The museum was started by Henry Ford as a way of preserving American life and includes vehicles, houses, and other buildings.
Historic Detroit
Within the city centre you can enjoy some of that historical architecture much of which was built when Detroit was a real boomtown. The Fisher Building and Cadillac Place are just two that are now National Historic Landmarks, while the modern skyscrapers such as the Renaissance Center give Detroit its skyline today.
