Michigan is an attractive US state situated in the Midwest of the country in the Great Lakes Region. The Great Lakes themselves are one of the state’s popular tourist attractions, but Michigan also offers big cities, small towns and varied landscapes to see.

Flights to Michigan

The most commonly used major airport for flights to Michigan is Detroit Metro Airport (airport code: DTW), just west of Detroit. Another option for international flights to Michigan is the Gerald R. Ford International Airport (airport code: GRR) in Grand Rapids. There are also a number of smaller regional airports all through the state. Delta Air Lines is the only carrier to offer direct flights to Michigan from London Heathrow, plus there are several one stop flights with Delta and additional airlines including Air France stopping in Atlanta, and British Midland and United Airlines travelling via Washington instead.

Michigan Tourist Attractions

Michigan is the 11th largest state in the USA and is the only state to have two completely separate peninsula’s – the Upper Peninsula and the Lower Peninsula have both been shaped by the Great Lakes and are connected via a 5 mile long suspension bridge. The Great Lakes play a big part in everyday life in Michigan and make a popular tourist attraction too, but this isn’t the only thing to see in the state.

Detroit

Detroit is by far Michigan’s largest city and the best known city in the state too. Built around industry, particularly cars but also music, Detroit remains a vibrant city with plenty to see and do despite the decline in the auto industry. Some of the city’s historic buildings are the best known landmarks including the Westin Book Cadillac Hotel, the Fisher Building, and the Guardian Building. The Henry Ford Estate allows you to tour the mansion and grounds of one of the world’s best known car makers, while a visit to the Henry Ford Museum is very interesting.

Lansing

Lansing is the state capital of Michigan and has a completely different feel to Detroit. This is a far smaller city with a small town feel and attractive historic downtown. It’s home to the Michigan State Capitol Building and the historic downtown makes a lovely place to come shopping with its assortment of independent stores, the Historic Lansing City Market, and Old Town to choose from.

Scenic Michigan

Being situated on the Great Lakes offers plenty of opportunity for outdoor activity in Michigan, plus the interior of the state has nearly 65,000 lakes and ponds to enjoy too! Isle Royal National Park is one of the popular destinations – as the name suggests this is a national park set on an island in the middle of Lake Superior and it’s connected to Michigan via a scheduled ferry service. This island features plenty of wildlife and plants as it’s well protected from human interference yet it is accessible to visitors and camping is allowed. Perhaps you’ll see some of the native moose or wolf.

Also on Lake Superior, on the southern shore, is Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. The main attraction here is the coloured and naturally sculpted rock formations with beautiful waterfalls. There’s also Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore which is on the shore of Lake Michigan and has huge sand dunes plus the Sleeping Bear Point Coast Guard Station and Maritime Museum to visit.

When Should You Visit Michigan?

Michigan generally enjoys warm summers making summertime a popular time to visit. The weather will be somewhat humid but warm and sunny. Winters are quite cold and snowy with the Lower Peninsula remaining warmer than the Upper Peninsula.
