The capital of the US state of Michigan is Lansing, situated in the south of the state. The city is best known for education though it also features a popular Old Town, parks and a zoo, and a handful of museums, making Lansing a popular tourist attraction.

The airport for flights to Lansing is the Capital Region International Airport (airport code: LAN), and it's just 3 miles from downtown Lansing. There is a public bus service to and from the city for easy access. Continental Airlines, Virgin Atlantic and American Airlines all have a 1-stop flight to Lansing from the UK that connects in Chicago. You can get a 2-stop flight with United Airlines or Air Canada that transfers in Toronto and then Chicago instead. The average flight to Lansing from the UK is around 13 hours long.

Lansing Tourist Attractions

Old Town

The Old Town area of Lansing is one of the most popular parts of the city, attracting tourists and locals with its nice mix of unique shops and restaurants. This is one of the more historic districts of Lansing and its many 19th century buildings overlook the Grand River. Old Town is a nice area to walk around, and there are lots of cultural events and festivals taking place here across the year.

Turner-Dodge House

If you’re looking for specific landmarks in Old Town, the Turner-Dodge House is one. This is a restored home that belonged to one of the earliest pioneers of Lansing, and was built in 1858. It’s a nice classical revival style home and guided tours are available.

Potter Park Zoo

The oldest public park in the state is located here in Lansing, and Potter Park Zoo is a popular family attraction. There are around 500 animals from 160 or so species including big cats, monkeys and many bird species. There’s a coral reef exhibit that has exotic fish and corals and a farmyard type exhibit where children can get up close to domestic animals, and fed and pet them.

Woldumar Nature Center

Another nature based attraction is the Woldumar Nature Center which covers 150 acres of woods and prairie and includes 5 miles of lovely trails for walking on. There are also some specialised gardens at the nature centre, if you enjoy more organised landscaping.

Museums in Lansing

Lansing has several smallish museums, with the main one being the Michigan Library and Historical Center. This institution has one of the ten largest genealogy collections in the country and it’s museum is dedicated to the history of Lansing and the state as a whole.

The Michigan Museum of Surveying is an interesting visit for anyone keen on maps as it’s the only museum in the US to be dedicated to surveying and mapping. Another specialist museum is the R.E. Olds Transportation Museum which is focused on Lansing’s role in the development of transport, particularly on the car.

When Should You Visit Lansing?

Lansing has a humid continental climate giving the city warm to hot, and humid summers and fairly chilly and snowy winters. Winter isn’t recommended for sightseeing in Lansing with an average high of below freezing in January, but summer are warm and sunny with temperatures peaking in July when the average high is 28C. The wettest months of the year are August and September.
