Minnesota Tourist Attractions

It’s hard to believe that one state could be home to over 15,000 lakes but Minnesota is. Outdoor recreation is really big in Minnesota for both the locals and the tourists who come to visit, and when you combine the lakes with the forests and parks it’s no surprise. Minnesota is also home to some big cities that are culturally rich too so there’s plenty to see and do here.

Minneapolis-Saint Paul

Known as the Twin Cities, Minneapolis and St Paul are very close by to each other and complement each other very well with their similarities and differences. Minneapolis is actually the largest city in Minnesota, and while Saint Paul may be smaller it is the state capital.

This means Saint Paul includes attractions like the State Capitol Building, as well as Como Zoo, historic houses, museums and galleries and the Wabasha Street Caves.

Minneapolis also has museums including the Minneapolis Institute of Arts and the Mill City Museum, as well as a great many open spaces and parkland with lakes including beaches, hiking and biking trails and more.

The Mall of America

In the Bloomington suburb of Minneapolis there are several attractions too. It’s best known for not only having the largest shopping mall in Minnesota, but the largest in the whole of the USA! It’s called the Mall of America and there are hundreds of shops as well as a theme park and aquarium inside.

Minnesota’s Parks

There are so many parks in Minnesota that most Minnesotans haven’t even visited them all, so as a tourist you’ll want to a pick to concentrate on. In total there are 72 state parks, 58 state forests and 1 national park in Minnesota. The national park is Voyageurs National Park where you can camp or enjoy the historic accommodation while taking in the lakes, and opportunities for canoeing, kayaking and fishing.

Another top destination in Minnesota is the Superior National Forest. Within this huge park is the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness where you can go canoeing in the wilderness for weeks on end, enjoying the wildlife and peace and quiet.

When Should You Visit Minnesota?

Minnesota’s continental climate gives the state fairly high extremes across the seasons and can be really quite different from one end of the state to the other, depending in proximity to the Great Lakes. Generally summers are fairly hot while winters are cold and snowy.
