Known as the Twin Cities, Minneapolis – St Paul is actually two neighbouring cities located in the south of the US state of Minnesota. Together they make the most populated city in the state and separately Minneapolis is the larger of the two, while Saint Paul is the capital.

Minnesota's main international airport is in Minneapolis-St. Paul. The Minneapolis - St. Paul International Airport (airport code: MSP) is connected to the city by a convenient light rail line, as well as taxi and shuttle bus service. There are several airlines that offer flights to Minneapolis-St. Paul from the UK, and they all have 1 transfer, hence there are no direct flights to Minneapolis-St. Paul from London. United Airways, British Airways and British Midland all connect in Chicago, and Delta Airlines makes its transfer in Atlanta.

Minneapolis - St. Paul Tourist Attractions

Though often considered to be one city, as a tourist it’s best to take the two cities separately because they do have different things to offer. Don’t try to cover them both at once; spend a few days in one then move onto the other and perhaps even consider changing hotels so that you’re in the heart of either city.

Minneapolis

As the larger of two cities you might expect Minneapolis to be full of tourist attractions, though funnily Saint Paul has just as much, to see and do as Minneapolis does! Minneapolis is a very attractive city with loads of open space and parks. You can get a real taste for the rest of Minnesota from your experience in Minneapolis as there are numerous lakes within the city. Minnehaha Park is a popular attraction and it’s home to the famous Minnehaha Falls that inspired the Song of Hiawatha.

For culture and museum lovers Minneapolis has plenty in the way of art on offer including the Weisman Art Museum, the Walker Art Center, and the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. The interactive displays and the observation deck of the Mill City Museum make this a popular Minneapolis-St. Paul attraction too. Finally on the Minneapolis side of the Twin Cities is the Mall of America, the largest shopping mall in the USA!

Saint Paul

Saint Paul may be the smaller of the Minneapolis - St. Paul Twin Cities but it has plenty to see and do. St Paul is the capital of the state of Minnesota so one attraction is the State Capitol Building and if you like historic architecture you’ll enjoy wandering along admiring the homes and mansions of Summit Avenue. Some of these are even open to the public including the home where writer F. Scott Fitzgerald lived.

Como Zoo and the Marjorie McNeely Conservatory are popular attractions too. In the zoo you can see numerous species from around the world, while the conservatory has beautiful gardens including orchids, bonsai trees and palms.

When Should You Visit Minneapolis - St. Paul?

With its continental climate the Twin Cities of Minneapolis - St. Paul are well known for their chilly and snowy winters. This means winter isn’t a good time to visit if you’re here for enjoying the outdoors! Summers are quite warm in comparison, getting up to an average high of 29C (84F). May, September and October are reasonable months to visit for good temperatures in less rainfall.
