Baton Rouge Tourist Attractions
If you know any French you’ll realise that Baton Rouge means ‘red stick’, and this is rather an unusual name for a city! It comes from something that happened around 300 years ago when the Native Americans used a blood stained pole to mark the line between their territories. The pole is no longer in existence but when the area was settled the story of this pole was remembered and hence the name was used.
Old State Capitol and Current State Capitol
Both the old and the current state capitols for Louisiana are located in the city of Baton Rouge, and both are major landmarks and popular tourist attractions.
Starting with the Old State Capitol, this is really quite a unique building amongst state capitols as it was built to look like a medieval castle. The castle is situated on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi, and it’s believed by some that this was the site of the aforementioned red pole! The castle was built in 1847 and used for the Louisiana State Legislature until the new capitol building was completed in 1929. Visitors can tour the building, making use of the hour long guided tour.
The current Louisiana State Capitol is also striking, but for different reasons. It’s a great example of art deco architecture and is famous for its tall central tower that makes it the tallest state capitol in the country. The tower has an observation deck that makes this a popular attraction as you can enjoy some wonderful views from the top.
Myrtles Plantation
There are a number of historic plantation homes left in Baton Rouge and they’re popular for the unique American South architecture and heritage associated with them. Of the several that are open for tours the Myrtle Plantation is renowned as being one of the most haunted houses in America, so it’s a particularly good one to visit if you’re interested in the paranormal!
Baton Rouge Zoo
Apart from the historical attractions Baton Rouge does have other things to see and do too, including the Baton Rouge Zoo. This is quite a substantial zoo, with over 1800 animals from all over the world, so there’s a diverse mix of animals to see. Rare tropical parrots, and an elephant oasis are just two of the attractions.
