Mississippi Tourist Attractions

While Mississippi doesn’t offer the world famous city of New Orleans, it does have some of its own beautiful and interesting cities to visit, all being very culturally and historically rich. The capital of the state, Jackson, and the city of Natchez are both fine examples.

Jackson

Jackson is both the capital and the largest city of Mississippi and it’s located in the west central part of the state. There’s a range of great old architecture to see here including the Old State Capitol and the New State Capitol, plus the grand Mississippi Governor’s Mansion. Museums are fairly abundant too, including the Mississippi Museum of Art, and the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science, as well as several house museums such as the Eudora Welty House Museum, and the Manship House Museum.

To experience more of the culture of Mississippi you can spend some time enjoying some of the state’s music here in Jackson. There are numerous bars and venues where live music is played and includes a full spectrum of styles from Blue Grass to heavy metal.

Natchez

Natchez is Mississippi’s best known city for antebellum houses, so is a popular place to visit if you’re interested in American history. Antebellum homes are homes that were built before the start of the American Civil War. They’re well known for being large and smart houses that were built for the wealthy and many of these homes in other cities were destroyed during the civil war. Natchez was a wealthy and therefore important city so there were more antebellum homes here than in many other cities and hence more survived.

If you visit the information centre in the town you can find out a schedule of which homes are open when. Not all of them are open and they’re not open all the time, so a schedule is important if you want to visit any of them. Longwood is the most notable and hence one of the most famous mansions in Natchez.

Gulf Islands National Seashore

Away from the cities you might like to spend time on the beach, cooling off from the hot temperatures and high humidity that Mississippi is known for. The Gulf Islands National Seashore is a great place to do this as it includes white sandy beaches on the Gulf of Mexico, and places where you can go swimming, camping and visiting historical sites that are within the boundaries too.

When Should You Visit Mississippi?

As summers are renowned for being long, hot and humid in Mississippi this may not be the best time to visit if you don’t like the heat! Late summer and autumn have a risk of hurricanes, but winter and spring have mild to warm weather which is better for sightseeing.
