Jackson Tourist Attractions
Jackson doesn’t have quite as many historical attractions as some other destinations in Mississippi, like Natchez, but it does still have its share of history, culture and other attractions including several museums.
Mississippi Museum of Art
The Mississippi Museum of Art is one of those and it features mainly the work of American artists including paintings, photographs and other works. Mississippi artists obviously feature strongly too, including one famous local, Eudora Welty, and her photography. Welty was a Jackson native and her home is now the Eudora Welty House Museum which you can also visit while in Jackson.
State Capitol Building
If you enjoy grand and historic architecture you’ll find several great examples here in Jackson. The ‘new’ Mississippi State Capitol Building is very impressive and has been home to the state legislature since 1903. The popular Beaux-Art style is similar to that of the White House in Washington.
The Old State Capitol Building is another landmark and this one dates from 1837. It’s not quite on the same scale as the new one and has a more refined architecture. Today it serves as a museum, preserving this important part of Jackson’s history.
Family Attractions in Jackson
You could easily take your family to the above attractions but if you have children and are visiting Jackson there are several attractions you might want to treat them to. These include the Jackson Zoological Park, the Davis Planetarium, and the Mississippi Museum of Natural History.
The zoo has nearly 800 animals to see, including species from the Americas as well as Africa and Asia. The Wilderness Mississippi exhibit is popular as it features plants and animals from the local area, while in the Mississippi Museum of Natural History you can learn more about some of those animals who are native to the state. This museum spills out to the outdoors as well as it includes 2 miles of trails that take you through wetlands and woods, showing nature in its natural habitat.
The Davis Planetarium shows regular multi-media sky shows that help to teach your kids, and the adults, about astronomy!
When Should You Visit Jackson?
Summers are hot and humid in Jackson and may be a little uncomfortable for some visitors not used to the high heat and humidity. Temperatures are usually in the 30s C (80s to 90s F) from June to September. Getting into October and November the weather is a little cooler and may be better for sightseeing. Winters are short and mild, occasionally dropping down enough to warrant snow.
