Missouri Tourist Attractions

Kansas City

Of Missouri’s cities, Kansas City is the largest. It’s located right on the border with the state of Kansas and the city is actually split between the two states. There are a variety of tourist attractions here including the Harley Davidson Final Assembly Plant, a tour of which is a must do for any fans of the Harley! The Liberty Memorial and National World War 1 Museum is a popular memorial come museum, and has particularly good views over the city, while other museums include the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, and the American Jazz Museum.

St Louis

St Louis is a large city too and it’s known for its many free visitor attractions! This attractive city was named after King Louis IX of France and features the tallest national monument in the world, the Gateway Arch, which is the symbol of the city. There’s a unique elevator to take you up into the arch and while there you shouldn’t miss the museum and movie that describes how the arch was built. St Louis is also home to the Missouri Botanical Garden, the Cathedral Basilica of St Louis, and the City Museum.

Jefferson City

Jefferson City is a far smaller city than the others but it’s worth visiting as it is the capital of Missouri. Jefferson City is better known for its historical attractions and landmarks that include the Jefferson Landing State Historic Site which is where settlers first came ashore from the Missouri River and established the city. The Missouri State Capitol Building is one of the city’s impressive landmarks and it was completed in 1917. Inside here you’ll find the Missouri State Museum.

Scenic Missouri

Missouri isn’t all about cities as there’s plenty of great scenery to see here too. The Ozark Mountains for example are in the south of the state and they’re famous for their beautiful scenery while offering visitors the chance to camp and enjoy outdoor recreation. The Lake of the Ozarks is particularly popular, plus there’s the Roaring River State Park to visit.

When Should You Visit Missouri?

Summers are generally hot and humid in Missouri with average highs getting up into the 30s C in some parts of the state. This is a good time for enjoying the great outdoors, while spring and autumn may be better for sightseeing as the temperatures and humidity are a little lower. Winters are cool but not overly cold.
