Founded in 1764 the city of St Louis is one of the largest in the US state of Missouri and it’s located right at the eastern edge of the state. This location is one of the reasons why St Louis has been nicknamed Gateway City, and Gateway to the West, and its most famous attraction is the Gateway Arch.

St Louis has a very good variety of attractions including architecture, museums, parks, and gardens making this an interesting and popular city to visit. Among St Louis’s many attractions some of the best include the following:
Gateway Arch
The most famous landmark in St Louis is Gateway Arch. It’s the tallest national monument in the world, standing 630 feet (192 metres) high and was built as a monument to the westward expansion of the USA. The unique elevator that takes you up to the top of the arch is a must-do attraction of St Louis and there are of course some excellent city views from up top. The Museum of Westward Expansion under the arch is good and especially good is the film which tells the story of the construction of the arch.
Jefferson National Expansion Memorial
The Gateway Arch is the showpiece of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial which encompasses a large park along the shores of the Mississippi, as well as the impressive Old Courthouse and the Old Cathedral, which was the first cathedral to be built west of the Mississippi.
The Cathedral Basilica of St Louis
Also known as the St Louis Cathedral, the Cathedral Basilica of St Louis is another of the city’s striking and well known landmarks. It was completed in 1914 though not consecrated until 1926 and was made a basilica by Pop John Paul II in 1997. This beautiful building features a spectacular mosaic, which is the largest in the world. The museum in the church basement is dedicated to the cathedral’s mosaics.
When Should You Visit St Louis?
St Louis has a fairly humid climate with lots of sunshine throughout the year. Summers are hot with July peaking at an average high of 32C (90F) and average low of 21C (70F). Spring and autumn can be mild, making these months a pleasant time to visit too, and though winters aren’t too cold the temperatures do drop quite considerably from the summertime high. The average high in January is 3C (38F) and there’s usually a little snowfall. April to July, plus November are the wettest months of the year in St Louis.
