Billings Tourist Attractions

Billings is situated in south central Montana and is best known as a tourist destination for its location close by to Yellowstone National Park, and the area in which the famous Battle of Little Bighorn was fought. For visitors travelling around this part of the United States this makes Billings a popular stopover destination, and with several of its own attractions you could spend several days in Montana’s largest city.

Pictograph Cave State Park

Just outside of Billings is the Pictograph Cave State Park. This may not be as well known as Yellowstone but it’s still an important and popular tourist attraction. Here you’ll find three caves that have been used since ancient times by the Native Americans who drew pictographs on the walls depicting life through the centuries.

Western Heritage Center

Billings’ historic downtown is a nice part of the city as it includes a number of older buildings dating back to the times when Billings was first settled in the late 1800s. One such building that dates from 1901 was once the library and now houses the Western Heritage Center. This is a museum that focuses on life in the West of the USA and has exhibits and artefacts on regional life.

The Moss Mansion Historic House Museum is another historic building. This was formerly the home of the Moss family who lived in the 28 room mansion. You can take tours of the house today and see what life was like for the wealthy back at the turn of the last century.

Yellowstone Art Museum

Another of Billings’ museums is the Yellowstone Art Museum and it’s actually the largest museum in the region. It is housed within what was once the Yellowstone County Prison and some parts of the original prison walls can still be seen here today. In terms of art you’ll get to see art from the Rocky Mountain West region including historical pieces, through the years to contemporary pieces of today.

ZooMontana

Billings is home to the only zoo in the state of Montana, ZooMontana. It’s popular because the animals are within natural habitat enclosures and gives visitors the chance to see numerous North American species.

When Should You Visit Billings?

Summer is always the most popular time to visit Billings when temperatures are warm to hot with average highs of around 30C. If you want to visit Billings and Yellowstone National Park when it’s a little quieter then spring and autumn may be a better time. Temperatures are a little cooler but still very pleasant. Winters too can be quite mild.
