Omaha Tourist Attractions
Historical Attractions in Omaha
Omaha was founded in 1854 and because of its central location within the United States it became a very important transportation hub during the 19th century. This led to the quick growth of Omaha and many of the fine buildings that were constructed during this time still stand in the city today. This makes Omaha a particularly interesting place to visit if you enjoy historical architecture.
In an effort to preserve as much of Omaha’s heritage as possible a staggering 12 historic districts have been created within the city. You could spend hours wandering around these historic districts looking at the different architecture but if you only have time to visit one or two make sure you visit the Fort Omaha Historic District as this area played an important part in US history. There are six buildings from the 19th century including the 1879 built General Crook House that is now home to the Douglas County Historical Museum.
Joslyn Castle is probably Omaha’s most recognisable and popular landmark. Built in 1903 this castle is in the Scottish Baronial style. You can enjoy the castle from the outside on any day and if you’d like to see inside Joslyn castle is open limited times through the year, usually on the first and third Sundays of the month.
Museums in Omaha
The Douglas County Historical Museum is not the only museum in Omaha; in fact there are several others to visit in the city. Another historically themed museum is the Durham Western Heritage Museum which is housed within one of the finest art deco buildings in the country. It’s a renovated art deco style train station. The Union Pacific Museum is also train related and here you can find out the story behind the Union Pacific Railroad.
For art lovers Omaha offers the Joslyn Art Museum where there are works by numerous famous names including Renoir, El Greco, Degas, and Monet, plus there are a number of galleries around the city too.
