Located in the western United States is the state of Nevada. Famous for its desert landscapes and for its city in the middle of the desert, Las Vegas, Nevada is more than just a haven for gambling and adult entertainment.
Flights to Nevada
There are two major airports in the state for flights to Nevada. The McCarran International Airport (airport code: LAS) outside of Las Vegas, and the Reno-Tahoe International Airport (code: RNO) located outside Reno. Between the two of them, the Vegas airport is the most common entry point for flights to Nevada. It's about 5 miles south of downtown Las Vegas, and there are public transit and taxi services into downtown and locations on The Strip. Flights to Nevada from London usually have 1 connection stop, depending on the airline. Continental stops in New York, United transfers in Los Angeles and British Airways connects in Denver.
Nevada Tourist Attractions
Las Vegas is definitely the first thing to spring to mind for many people when thinking of Nevada and while this is the state’s most visited destination it’s not all that Nevada has to offer!
Carson City
If you’re looking to experience a little less of the glitz and glamour associated with Las Vegas, Carson City is a good place to come. This is actually the capital city of the state of Nevada and it’s a far more down to earth city! There are several attractions here including museums like the Nevada State Museum, the Nevada State Railroad Museum, and the Nevada State Governor’s Museum. The Nevada State Capitol Complex is a major landmark and attraction in Carson City.
Las Vegas
You don’t have to be into gambling to enjoy a visit to Las Vegas as there’s so much more here than casino floors! The massive mega resorts that hold the casinos will likely amaze you with their size and the imagination that went into creating some of them. As well as hotels the mega resorts include restaurants and shops and numerous attractions such as the lions of MGM, the fountains of Bellagio, the Eiffel Tower of Paris, and a roller coaster at New York New York.
Don’t forget to visit downtown Las Vegas too as there are some older and smaller casinos here and several attractions such as the towering Stratosphere with its amazing views over Vegas and the desert.
If you want to enjoy some gambling in a city not quite as large as Vegas then you can also travel to Nevada’s other famous gabling town, Reno, where there are several large Vegas style resorts.
The Hoover Dam
Another popular attraction in Nevada is the Hoover Dam and it’s close enough to Vegas for a day trip. This immense dam was a feat of engineering when it was built in 1935 and it continues to impress visitors to this day. Take one of the tours to find out more about the dam and go behind the scenes!
When the Hoover Dam was put into operation the dam formed Lake Mead. The Lake Mead Recreation Area has long been a popular getaway destination where you can enjoy swimming and boating.
When Should You Visit Nevada?
Nevada is definitely renowned for its hot weather and if you don’t like it really hot you should avoid coming in the middle of the summer when average highs often reach into the 40s C. In most of the state winters are very short and you can sometimes still enjoy temperatures up around 20C in the winter in Nevada. But being in the desert the night time lows are quite cool and snow does sometimes fall.
