Las Vegas is the state of Nevada’s largest city and its most popular tourist destination. Known as the Entertainment Capital of the World, Las Vegas certainly has a multitude of attractions to keep you entertained, even if you’re not into gambling!

Flights to Las Vegas

The McCarran International Airport (airport code: LAS) is the major airport for Nevada, and where all flights to Las Vegas will arrive. It’s located about a 15 minute drive from downtown Las Vegas and even closer to the hotels and resorts on the famous Las Vegas Boulevard. For flights to Las Vegas, you will have one connection when travelling from London. Flights with United or Virgin Atlantic connect in Chicago, and British Airways transfers in Denver. For another option, try a flight to Las Vegas with Air Canada and have your transfer in Toronto.

Las Vegas Tourist Attractions

It’s difficult to picture what Las Vegas was like when gambling was legalised back in 1931, when it was a small town in the middle of the desert. Today the desert’s still there but Las Vegas is a huge city that not only attracts gamblers but families and couples of all ages.

When Las Vegas first grew all the casinos and hotels were in the downtown area but in the following years a couple of investors decided to build outside of the city centre in the area now known as The Strip. As the hotels and resorts got larger and larger so too did The Strip and the downtown area got quieter and quieter. In the last decade or so downtown Las Vegas has been redeveloped and is now a popular attraction again, especially in the evenings when the Fremont Street Experience (a covered pedestrian zone) really comes alive.

Another attraction in downtown Las Vegas is the Stratosphere. This is unmistakably the tallest building in Las Vegas standing 350 metres (1149 ft) high and its observation deck with views over the whole of Las Vegas is very popular. If you dare there are also some thrill rides right at the top of the tower, not for the faint of heart!

On The Strip, most of which is officially named Las Vegas Boulevard, you’ll find all those mega resorts. The casinos are just one element of many of these hotels where numerous other attractions are offered too. Entertainment is big business and there are many different shows and concerts always on in Las Vegas. Cirque du Soleil is one of the most famous and popular.

The Bellagio resort is also very famous (thanks in large part to Ocean’s Eleven!) and you can catch the fabulous Fountains of Bellagio through the day and into the evening at regular intervals. For a faster pace try the roller coaster at New York New York, or rise to the top of the Eiffel Tower in the Paris Las Vegas resort. You can even ride on a gondola on the canals of The Venetian resort!

All this and more can be enjoyed, and only in Las Vegas!

When Should You Visit Las Vegas?

Las Vegas has a warm climate throughout the year though temperatures have been known to drop a little during the winter sometimes and there’s been the occasional snowfall. Spring is a good time to visit as temperatures are warm but not too hot, while by summer the heat is on and the average daily high for July is 40C.
