Situated in the New England region of the north eastern United States is the state of New Hampshire. New Hampshire is one of the smallest and least populated states in the USA but even so it offers attractive cities and beautiful scenery

Flights to New Hampshire

The main airport for flights to New Hampshire is the Manchester-Boston Regional Airport (airport code: MHT), located a few miles outside the city of Manchester, the largest city in New Hampshire. You can catch an indirect flight to here, or opt to land at the Boston Logan International Airport in neighbouring Massachusetts. When taking a flight to New Hampshire from London, and arriving at the Manchester-Boston Airport, there are a large number of options. For flights with one transfer, both British Airways and British Midland stop in Philadelphia, whereas KLM transfers in Detroit. For a 2-stop flight to New Hampshire, book with United Airlines and connect in Washington and Philadelphia. If you fly with Continental, you'll go through Manchester (the UK city!), then New York.

New Hampshire Tourist Attractions

New Hampshire is probably best known for its beautiful scenery and is particularly popular during the autumn when thousands of visitors come here to experience the stunning fall colours that New England is so famous for. The state of New Hampshire does have plenty in the way of scenery throughout the year though and when combined with attractive cities this makes a great destination for a holiday.

Manchester

New Hampshire’s largest city is named Manchester, and yes it was named after the city in England! Originally this city was named Derryfield but when it started to become industrialised and grew in size it took on the name of Manchester. The Manchester Historical Society Millyard Museum is one of the city’s top tourist attractions and is at the heart of the history of the city. Exhibits obviously focus the history and development that took place here during the American industrial revolution. The Currier Art Museum is another popular attraction in the city.

Concord

Concord also features plenty of history. This is New Hampshire’s capital city and its relatively small size gives Concord a more relaxed, small town feel. Concord was settled back in 1725 so it’s rich in history. Landmarks include the New Hampshire State House which was built in the early 1800s, and the famous Eagle Hotel. You can’t stay at the Eagle Hotel anymore as it doesn’t offer accommodation now, but the building is a famous landmark as guests have included Eleanor Roosevelt, Richard Nixon, and Ulysses S. Grant.

Parks and Forests in New Hampshire

New Hampshire has a great assortment of parks and forests that make this the ideal destination for those who enjoy the great outdoors. White Mountain National Forest is one of these where recreational opportunities are abundant – hiking, mountain biking, canoeing, fishing and more during the summer, and snowshoeing and snowmobiling in the winter.

Within the national forest you can also visit the Mount Washington State Park which features the world’s first mountain cog railway, the Mount Washington Cog Railway, which has been taking passengers up to the mountain summit since 1869, a 3 hour round trip available in the spring and summer.

When Should You Visit New Hampshire?

If you like winter sports then winters are a good time to visit New Hampshire, but be prepared for fairly cold, damp and snowy weather in the mountain regions. Lower elevations are not quite as cold, in Concord for example the average high in January is 0.7C. Summers are warm and humid, and in Concord the summer average highs get up to 28C.
