Situated in the state of New Jersey in the north east of the United States is the city of Atlantic City. As the name suggests, Atlantic City is positioned on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean and for many decades has been a popular seaside destination. Now Atlantic City is most famous for its casinos.

Flights to Atlantic City

The Atlantic City Airport (airport code: ACY) is conveniently located, but does not accept major international flights to Atlantic City. The other airport in New Jersey is in Newark, but the Philadelphia International Airport (code: PHL) is closer for flights to Atlantic City. It's about an hour away by car or an hour and a half by train. There are direct flights with British Midland or British Airways from the UK. Other choices are with Virgin Atlantic, connecting once in New York, or Northwest Airlines that transfers in Detroit.

Atlantic City Tourist Attractions

Incorporated as a city in 1854 Atlantic City has always been a popular seaside town and has had a boardwalk since as far back as 1870. This boardwalk is one of Atlantic City’s best known landmarks and remains a tourist attraction to this day. Along with the usual seaside attractions that you’ll find in Atlantic City the city is now well known for its gambling and casinos. Gambling is legal here and hence many casinos have sprung up, offering multiple opportunities for trying your hand. Among the popular things to see and do in Atlantic City are the following:

Atlantic City Boardwalk

Said to be the world’s first boardwalk, the AC Boardwalk is definitely the world’s longest. At one time in history it ran about 7 miles (11km) in length until a hurricane in 1944. Nowadays it’s still vast, covering a distance of about 5.75 miles (9.25km).

You can walk along the length of the pier and enjoy easy access to many hotels and other attractions including several piers, jutting out into the ocean. The piers themselves have ample things to do including amusements, shops, entertainment and more.

Atlantic City Historical Museum

If you want to find out more about the history of the boardwalk and the rest of the city, visit the Atlantic City Historical Museum which depicts the history of the city through numerous artefacts and exhibits.

Family Attractions in Atlantic City

Aside from those above Atlantic City has a number of other family friendly attractions. These include Lucy the Elephant (situated in nearby Margate), a huge elephant that’s actually a building and was built in 1881. The Atlantic City Aquarium is also popular and features eight giant aquariums, a shipwreck and more.

If you enjoy a game of Monopoly make sure you see the Monopoly Monument. The US version of the game is based upon the streets of Atlantic City! Absecon Lighthouse is popular for the great views over the New Jersey shoreline it gives. You can climb the 228 steps to the top of this lighthouse, the tallest in the state.

When Should You Visit Atlantic City?

Atlantic City has a humid subtropical climate which means its summers are warm enough for enjoying the beach and all those seaside activities. The average high in July is a warm 27C and from June to September you can expect average highs of above 20C. Winters are quite cool in comparison and snow is not uncommon. The average high in January is 5C.
