New Jersey is situated in the north east of the USA and is well known for its popular gambling city, Atlantic City. Even though New Jersey is the most densely populated state in America it still offers plenty of greenery and scenery including forests and coasts.

The main airport for international flights to New Jersey is the Newark Liberty International Airport (airport code: EWR). The smaller Atlantic City Airport (code: ACY) is mainly for local charter flights to New Jersey. Given its proximity to New York, Newark is a busy airport and offers many flight options. You can get a non-stop flight to New Jersey with Continental Airlines, British Airways or Virgin Atlantic from the UK. Alternatively, there are routes with one connection with United Airlines or British Midland. They both connect in Washington.

Atlantic City

New Jersey has a number of sizeable cities and of these Atlantic City is one of the most famous. As the name suggests, this is a coastal city, situated on the Atlantic, and was founded with the main intention of being a seaside resort. There are boardwalks, beaches, museums and an aquarium, and of course Atlantic City is also a thriving casino town.

Trenton

Trenton is one of the smaller cities in the state but it’s important because this is the capital of New Jersey. This historic city was settled in the early 1700s and has a beautiful old state building. The New Jersey State House has parts that date back to the city’s incorporation in 1792 and tours are available. The city was named after William Trent and his historic house is another attraction.

Newark

Newark is a well known city because it’s home to one of the region’s largest and busiest airports. Newark offers historical architecture too, but it mainly dates from the turn of the last century. Newark Museum comprises many different attractions in one, making this one of the city’s top tourist attractions. It includes a planetarium, art galleries, mini zoo and more.

Jersey City

Located close by to New York City is Jersey City. The proximity to Manhattan makes Jersey City a good alternative as a place to stay and offers its on historic downtown if you enjoy historical American architecture.

Forests, Shores and More in New Jersey

Though New Jersey is densely populated and has a number of large cities the state also offers plenty of scenery and opportunities for outdoor recreation. About a third of the state of New Jersey is covered by lush forests called the Pine Barrens where you can enjoy many different activities. Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, and the Gateway National Recreation Area are two more places where there’s plenty to see and do, plus there’s the Appalachian National Scenic Trail.

When Should You Visit New Jersey?

New Jersey has a climate that’s between humid subtropical and humid continental, depending on whereabouts in the state you are. The distance from the ocean and the mountains are deciding factors but generally you can expect long and fairly hot summer, and cold winters.
