Albuquerque Tourist Attractions
Albuquerque is often overshadowed by the more popular city of Santa Fe, but if you’re looking for a good mix of tourist attractions a visit to Albuquerque is definitely recommended.
Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta
Probably the best known attraction in Albuquerque is the annual International Balloon Fiesta which attracts thousands of spectators and hundreds of hot air balloons. This is actually the largest hot air balloon festival in the world and really is a spectacular event. Many tourists will come to Albuquerque simply for the festival, but be prepared for lot of crowds if you do visit Albuquerque in early October.
If you’re interested in finding out more about the Balloon Fiesta you can also visit the International Balloon Museum.
Albuquerque Biological Park
The Albuquerque Biological Park offers three attractions in one and with combined entrance tickets available you can save money on the individual entry fees. The Rio Grande Zoo is one of the three and its attractive animal enclosures make this a pleasant and family friendly place to view the animals. During the summer there are shows and activities for all ages, while all through the year you can watch the animals being fed according to the posted timetable that you’ll see on entry to the zoo. The narrow gauge railway running around the zoo is also popular!
The Albuquerque Aquarium, and the Botanical Gardens are the other two attractions within the Albuquerque Biological Park and they’re connected to the zoo via a different narrow gauge railway. Both offer plenty more to see, and are suitable for all ages.
Albuquerque Old Town
The historic centre of Albuquerque is where the city was first founded back in 1706 and this is a top tourist destination within the city. The range of architecture is attractive and interesting and there are many great restaurants and shops to enjoy too.
Pop in to the Albuquerque Museum of Art and History to find out more about the history and culture of the region, and you can also book yourself onto a guided walking tour of Albuquerque Old Town while you’re here.
Sandia Peak Tramway
Away from the city proper, another of Albuquerque’s top tourist attractions is the Sandia Peak Tramway. This is an aerial tramway that whisks you up the Sandia Mountains where there are some great spots or hiking, or simply for admiring the views over Albuquerque and beyond.
When Should You Visit Albuquerque?
Albuquerque is a sunny and fairly dry city so you could visit here through most of the year. Autumn is popular around the Balloon Fiesta when temperatures are mild. In the summer average highs are around the low 30’s C, and although winters are far cooler the sunny days make this still a good time for sightseeing.
