The blend of Spanish and Mexican heritage gives New Mexico a different atmosphere to most other US states and you’ll find nearly as many people speaking Spanish here as English!
Flights to New Mexico
There is only one airport that accepts major international flights to New Mexico, and it's located near Albuquerque in the centre of the state. The Albuquerque International Sunport (airport code: ABQ) is known for its turbulent weather, so be prepared for a bumpy arrival. British Airways has a 1-stop flight to New Mexico from the UK that transfers in Denver. Most other airlines have 2 connections. United Airlines stops in Chicago and Denver, and Virgin travels through San Francisco and Denver. Or for a completely different route, book a flight to New Mexico with Air France and go to New York and Atlanta.
New Mexico Tourist Attractions
Santa Fe
Though not the largest city by any means, Santa Fe is one of New Mexico’s top tourist destinations and the city is the capital of the state. Santa Fe is actually the oldest capital in the USA as it was founded way back in 1607, and it sits at the highest elevation.
There are all sorts of attractions here including unique architecture such as the state capitol building. It’s known as the Roundhouse, for obvious reasons, while there are beautiful colonial buildings such as St Francis Cathedral. During the summer the city really comes to life and is a vibrant and interesting place to wander around. Visit some of New Mexico’s top museums here also, including the New Mexico Museum of Art, Rancho de los Golondrinas, and the Palace of Governors.
Albuquerque
New Mexico’s largest city is Albuquerque and it’s best known for its fabulous International Balloon Fiesta in which hundreds of hot air balloons take to the skies during this fiesta every autumn. Whether or not you’re visiting during the balloon fiesta you can pop in to the International Balloon Museum, or visit the Albuquerque Biological Park where there are several attractions including a zoo, botanical gardens and an aquarium. The Sandia Peak Tramway is another popular attraction.
Carlsbad Caverns National Park
New Mexico is not just about cities, in fact one of the state’s top tourist attractions is perfectly natural. The Carlsbad Caverns National Park features spectacular caverns that are among the largest in the world and you can take guided tours.
New Mexico’s Other National Areas
As well as the national park there are several other ‘national’ areas within New Mexico. White Sands National Monument also has some quite unique and spectacular natural scenery which focuses around the largest gypsum sand dune in the world. There’s also the El Malpais National Monument and the Bandelier National Monument to see.
When Should You Visit New Mexico?
New Mexico’s warm summers make this a popular time to visit, and you’ll find temperatures usually up into the 30’s C. Santa Fe can be a little cooler than other places in New Mexico due o its high elevation, but even here the average high in July is 30C. Winters are in comparison quite cold. In January Santa Fe’s average high is only -9C.
